snowflake and kit promoter, kp, are both hidden genes, just like dp. You need two copies of the genes and in the case of sf (dunno for kp, I don't fiddle with it) you may need some extra genes. For snowflake to show up, you need a horse to be homozygous for it as well as to have at least one copy of appaloosa.
I know you can gmt a horse to have kp, but you cannot gmt a horse to have snowflake, although it was an event for a time.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

They are recessive genes meaning they need 2 copies to show.
2 copies of snowflake + at least het Lp (appy)
2 copies of Kit Promoter + 2 kit genes (Roan, W20, etc)
Snowflake can be found in foundations, normally Het only but someone did get a Hom Snowflake once. Still the chances are low, as ObsidianKitsune said the gene was for sale at one point. Will it be for sale again, I'm unsure only Ammit knows.
It's 10 gmts for Hom KP to be added to a foundation.
Perfect Foundations, Ranks Specials and Ex pros seem to be the most common for Gmt horses.●▬▬▬▬▬▬๑۩۩๑▬▬▬▬▬▬▬●

Here are just a couple of additions:
1. The two Kit mutations don't have to be different. For Roan and Tobiano, especially, the horse can be homozygous for one and homozygous for KP, and the cloudy effect will show up.
2. The spontaneous Snowflake carriers that are sometimes created are not always or even mostly, I think, appaloosas. It's when they are bred to a snowflake carrying appaloosa who hands down a copy of both that the truth pops out because the foal is obviously a snowflake appaloosa.De gustibus non disputandum. I created a bunch of solid colored foundations last month and bred them to a known Het snowflake appy stallion just to use him up for the month and ended up with two hom. Snowflake foals so I knew that those two solid colored Foundation mares carried SNF. If I hadnt of done that I would have never known and they would have been tossed in the Auction. So you just never know when one will pop up.
