Boosting
-
I'm starting to organize my barns. I realized that the liver stallion (RH) I was using was 18 so relatively high risk of aging out. So I started looking around at my prospects, and found this guy.
3G The Terminator
He has everything on the list
Height
Weight
Color
Homebred by me all the way to foundation
Het. KP
Except he's B papered. Which I refuse to use a 3G B stallion. He did pass SBA, so hence my question - can you share with me your luck with Boosting? Are you glad you did? Any guess on the chance on a boost being enough to make him A papered? I'm not quite sure if I want to risk 10$ for a boost.
He does have a half brother who I plan on using no matter what.
3G Yagoozle
He is even taller and has appy, but he is Bay. No idea if he got the DP. And he is running the line between RH and WB on weight.Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses. -
$10 is only a 1% boost. It may not be enough to move him across the line. Do you have any gen 2 A papered Colts you could compare him against? A gen 2 A should be borderline A/B, so if he compares AGA a known low A you should be able to push him over the line with one or two boosts. Yes, maybe $20, and then you know he’s just barely an A.
I have made a personal policy to not boost unless I can’t access those bloodlines again. Your Terminator is 2, so you have time to make a choice. What did your gen 3 colts look like this year? Are there any A colts that fit the bill more closely? Do you have any Blue fillies you could make into a stallion?
I guess all of this should tell you I find boosting to be very risky. I have boosted the full 5% on a horse and not had them move up a paper level. That is expensive! I would look at ALL of your options before you jump into boosting. Get out a piece of paper and list all your candidates, their pros and cons and how much it’s going to cost you to make them “right” so you can make an informed decisions with all the factors in front of you.
Also, The Terminator is listed for sale. You might want to take him off the Sales lists until you make a decision! -
Yea, 10$ is quite a bit for me. I don't think I'll boost him. I guess I was hoping someone would come and buy him and decide for me lol. I might make him a mare, but that's still 2 GMTs. I decided to never boost but he is just so tempting. No other colts this season come close to fitting the bill. I never considered changing a filly - that's definitely something to consider. I think I'll just cross my fingers the stallion I have sticks around another season. Then hope the appy brother got the DP. By then something will hopefully have popped up.

Well, one thing to remember, if he wasn't quite good enough as a stallion, he still has the same quality as a mare, so it may not be worth the GMTs. I would use those GMTs to make your other boy exactly how you want him (tweak his bone size, take the black off of him, etc.)Specializing in W8, W3 & Kit M Cream & Pearl draft horses.

I think he's very pretty, and my G3 lines are just for my own amusement right now, so he fits in very nicely with my needs. He's good enough for Hogwarts!
Personally, I think you have great enough lines that you can recreate these looks with better stats you want for your program. He is always open to you for straws or breeding rental at any time if you change your mind, but I applaud you for sticking to your guns and choosing to keep searching for quality, rather than settling due to his looks. There's always next season!
Save your money for something REALLY awesome : )Looking for Appaloosas? Check out my Riata account.Thanked by 1HunterUnderSaddleGirl -
Thank you so much! Definitely problem solved. I was really just gonna be bummed if he went to auction or something like that. Hopefully my current liver boy will stick around another year. Hopefully the next colt will be homo KP. And maybe the appy boy did get the DP, and he will pass it along with the appy which would be super cool.Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.

@HunterUnderSaddleGirl I can give you this guy for create price if you want? He's probably only a low A as he has tested as good as his sire, he might be het KP but I can't guarantee that, I know he's not your lines though so you don't have to have him, I'm keeping his half brother that is as good as him but jas kitM he's hom dp and sooty +, you could also gmt white 2 or kitM on him or another copy of splash.

It's a pity you didn't keep him to see if he was AGA a low A. I have a 2G A boy in my herd that I could've lent you for comparison testing, but didn't see this until now. But any time you get a 3G B that you really wanna keep, you could use my boy to see if he is AGA.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

@NorthernStars
Yes please! He is gorgeous!

Yea that would have been smart, but I'm content he got a new home and I got what I want. Thank you for the offerBreeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses. -
