Breeding question:
  • If I breed to good showers together would I get a good showing foal?

  • No, show score and breeding score are not related in any way.
  • In addition, every horse's range of possible breeding results is pretty broad. Breeding two perfect foundations together can result in foals with PT scores stretching from 8.9 through 10.4!

So the "Create Foal" button triggers the program to select a random value from the mare's range and a random value from the stallions range, calculate the average of the two random numbers and assign it to the foal. The important word there is "random." (This is how I understand what is going on in the background. Only Ammit has the exact details.)

You might get numbers near the top of each range, near the bottom of each range, near the top of one and the bottom of the other, somewhere in the middle of both, from the middle of one and the top of the other, from the middle of one and the bottom of the other....well, as you can see, like real-life, there's a lot of uncertainty in this game, which is one of the reasons I love it.

As a real-life example (which I apologize for telling you if you are already aware of it), take Secretariat, the most remarkable race horses of my lifetime, whose racing stride has never been matched (so far as I have ever heard). After he was retired from racing to breeding, he never produced a son who came anywhere close to matching him. Never. But as the years and generations went on, it became obvious that he was a remarkable sire of brood mares, and for several years he held the record for producing mares with excellent racing offspring.

There are no guarantees in this game, just as there are none in real life. (Except, perhaps, the guarantee that each horse in a breeding has a 50% chance of handing down each of its color alleles to every foal, although that doesn't mean that half of the foals will have one of a pair and half will have the other. 8-|
De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."
