Organizing lines?
-
How does one get started?
I know my genes to each line that I have but am unsure how to keep them straight.
I have 5 main lines that I want to work with.
If someone could tell me a good strategy in keeping them straight it would be much appreciated. -
I keep a 3 letter initial of the line after the gen (normally the initials of the lead stallion). Like I have "BGT" (Big grullo toby) that has a foundatioin, and 2 gen part. If I want to see any of them I just search BGT. Or I can 1G or 2G.

You could make simple tattoos to help search the line.
They can simply be blank tattoo slots with the appropriate title. For example Line X F, Line X 2, Line X 3 and so forth. You would place them on the lip, which is hidden. (X stands for the name you'd be giving to the line.)
I believe that TripleSpiral uses all hidden, blank tattoos except for her stable tattoo.
You'd have the expense of creating the tattoo slots, of course, but you could add them gradually to avoid a huge burden on your bank balance all at one time.

How does one come up with names for their lines. I have Halloween Dancer and Joeys Dream. My other lines have no name and am unsure how to come up with good names.
My other line is my Nexus Line
Macchiato line and Kitm line. Any suggestions would be helpful? -
For my Hugs for Ladies stallion I did HFL. Maybe HDH Halloween Dancer Harem.
Also what distinguishes those other lines? Is there 3 particular genes they have? Are they tall/heavy etc? Like BGT Big (draft) grullo toby. AKA Britains Got Talent. It can be anything. If it's an important group you can even just do AAA (The A team) and also if you sort your barns alphabetically they'll come to the top. Then you could do BBB etc. But I like my current names.
I have
BSB (Big Silver Black)
SFP (Sir Fancy Pants - DP Draft 1G line)
HFL (2G DP Draft line)
BCH (Big Champagne)
SCH (Small Champagne)
and lots more. When you sort an unorganized barn alphabetically (in my case) it sorts 1G, 2G, 3G, then specifically it will group up the horses from the same group.Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses. -
I don't do much with specific lines. I start them and then they get lost in my huge pile of horses. :D I started a gray line, once, that I called Misty Meadows. I also played around with a bay dun line I named Dunedin Bay, and a champagne line I named Toast of the Town, with TT in front of the names of intact horses. On HaJ 1, I began a homozygous sooty flaxen chestnut line called Eos Rose.
None of them are currently getting much attention, however.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

I don't really care about lines, at the minute I'm just trying to add different genes in, but I only bred for liver chestnut or chocolate palominos, I just keep then evenly bred and hope for the best.21170 ~ Breeder of quality Liver Chestnut and Chocolate Palomino riding horses and ponies with unique twists. Coming soon ~ Snowflake, Nexus and Ice5 -
My lines are named for the genes I'm looking for. So my Macchiato line is my Macchiato line...with an Ausmerican Macchiato tattoo and they're all in Mach pastures. I know the names of the boys that anchor that line, but I haven't named the line for those boys.
I use tattoos for specific genes, but some of those genes (like DP for instance) show up in several of my lines. I use a suffix after my horse's names that is code for their color, patterns, special genes and their generation. So horses with a capital J in their suffix all are in my Gulastra Plume line, or with a capital K they're all in my Kit Promoter line.
