What if?
-
I don't think I have the GMT's to justify trying, but what do you think would happen if I GMTed the DP back on? Or do you think he might already have it? (His sire carries DP)

Also, what if I changed one of the A's to a? (Reason being to try and cross with the rest of my champagne herd to double up on my classic champagne herd)
(And I'm still slightly confused on the E/e and how it works with A's and a's etc.Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses. -
On this colt changing his As to an a wouldn't have any impact on him, because A only interacts with E (it restricts where the E black hairs go). A has no impact on e.
-
Ok, what affects could it potentially have in his foals?Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.

Hey HUSG,
Currently, this colt would never be able to produce a black foal because he has two dominant agouti alleles. By having two dominant agouti alleles, he will always pass on an "A", classic bay phenotype. By changing an "A" to an "a", with the proper cross in mind, 50% chance he will pass on "A" (bay) and 50% chance he will pass on "a" (black). However, since he is "ee", he will always pass on an "e" and will only produce red based foals unless bred to a "EE" or "Ee" mare.
E/e is the expression of black pigment. A homozygous recessive extension, genotype ee, will have a phenotype of red. A homozygous dominant or heterozygous dominant extension, genotype EE or Ee, will have a phenotype of black pigment (black or bay depending on agouti status).
A/a controls the restriction of black pigment. A homozygous recessive agouti, genotype aa, will have even expression of black pigment when dominant extension is present, genotype EE or Ee.
Example one: A horse with the genotype "EeAa" is producing black pigment but the pigment is restricted to the points resulting in a bay phenotype. This horse can produce black, bay, or red foals when crossed with specific pairings.
Example two: A horse with genotype "EE Aa" is producing black pigment but the pigment is restricted to the points and is also a bay phenotype. Different from the previous example, this horse can produce black or bay foals and never red foals.
I hope this helps. :) -
Ok, thank you! That definitely does help. So if added the DP and changed AA to Aa. Then I could breed him to all of my ee DP mares and make some livers. And breed to all of my EE mares and get 50% classic champagne.Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.

Glad I could help!
And yes, by adding DP he could produce liver foals so long as he also passes on his Sooty gene. (Or the mares pass on their Sooty and DP gene.)
And yes again, by changing "AA" to "Aa" he has a 50% chance of donating his "a" and a 50% chance of donating his champagne gene to produce classic champagne foals (so long as the mares at at least EeAa, best chance would be to breed mares with EEaa).Thanked by 1HunterUnderSaddleGirl -
Does he have genes right now that would express the DP if I did add it to him right now? I know he would need the other sooty to say liver.
And just to confirm phonetically (that's what it's called right?) changing the A to a would not change his appearance as it stands now.Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses. -
Yes, his current genetic would allow him to display DP. I am not good at detecting DP on a het sooty champagne though, so I can't determine if he is currently expressing it or not. The good news is this, if he is currently expressing DP, you won't get charged for adding DP. :)
Also, yes, phenotypically speaking he will not change. Phenotype is the observable characteristics resulting from the interaction of an individuals genotype. Genotype being the genetic constitution of an individual.

I think I've decided to comparison test him to my appy DP stud, and my Classic Champagne stud and see how he stacks up. I just love how his spots are! LOL. I do have an A stud that is similiar in phenotype, but no chance at DP. And is already so Aa and no champagne. The other thing I like about this colt is he's by one of my favorite stallions that will age out relatively soon. And that way he can have an impact on some of my others breeding goals.
Other similiar stud.

You have some appies with great spots! You should be proud of these handsome studs.
Also, I would definitely keep the original colt intact if he is out of a favorite aged stallion. He would always make nice foals without any GMTing. :) -
Thanks! I have a soft spot for the appies. I guess I can throw them together into just an appy breeding program. Every program needs some appy added in. lol.
Thanks for your help and advice! I love looking at horses and doing the "What if's" as it helps me to understand everything.Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses. -
No problem, it was my pleasure. I enjoy going "What if" too. :)
