WhiteFactor Question!
-
So when a horse has Extensive White Factor... None would be safe obviously! But would minimal be safe? Light?
What white factors are safe?
Thanks guys!DivineDreams ~ 30908

As far as lethality goes, if you breed an extensive white factor horse to a horse without any KIT allele mutation you will be safe 100% of the time. Unless you do some other lethal cross such as frame x frame.
If you want to breed horses that have KIT allele mutations together, your best bet would be to find a none or light white factor mate and to follow these guidelines: New KIT lethality and Kit Mutation Load explained
I hope this helps. If you post links to the horse(s) in question, I could potentially be a little more specific. :) -
@Ritsika What about horses that have no kit genes but have wf? Example
LiverAppPatn Arrowaine
This girl has frame but no kit
LiverAppFr BlackWychDivineDreams ~ 30908

@DivineDreams, from my understanding, both of those mares would be 100% safe with a stallion with no KIT genes and no frame.
LiverAppPatn Arrowaine would be safe with a stallion that has frame because she doesn't carry frame.
LiverAppFr BlackWych, if bred to a heterozygous frame stallion, would produce a healthy foal 75% of the time and a lethal foal 25%.
25% = lethal homozygous frame foal
50% = healthy heterozygous frame foal
25% = healthy none frame foal
Both mares would also typically produce healthy foals when bred to stallions with KIT genes. I breed a lot of KIT Promoter horses so I play the lottery with a lot of crosses since the majority of my horses are medium to extensive in white factor. I can get healthy foals from extensive white factor crossed with none-medium white factor.
Example:
3G Watch Man HKP
Sire - light white factor
3G Watch Dragon HKP
Dam - extensive white factor
SH Ear Tips
Foal - extensive white factor
Note!~ Splash adds to the white factor. So if you would like to lower the white factor of future foals you could eliminate splash. Hope this helps. :D -
Oh boy I am confused.
So if I bred 2 horses with NO lethal genes (ie splash or frame or kit) but still have wf, i could still end up with a dead foal?
Example

This is the stallion that I want to breed them toDivineDreams ~ 30908

No. If your horses don't have any of the Splash genes or any of the Kit patterns or Frame, they are safe to breed with pretty much anything.
Both of your mares are safe with this stallion.
These things are always lethal:
Homozygous Frame
In a cross between 2 heterozygous Frame horses, there is a 1/4 chance of a lethal foal.
If you breed a heterozygous horse to a homozygous horse (all Freaky Friday rank specials are homozygous Frame) there is a 1/2 chance of a lethal foal.
Homozygous Splash 2
Homozygous Splash 3
A horse that is het Splash 2 and Het Splash 3
Other than that, refer to the Kit Lethality chart.
Appaloosa does NOT increase kit lethality, but Splash and Frame do. Don't know about Rabicano. Appaloosa expression is also not governed by white factor...but that's a whole different conversation. -
@DivineDreams - White Factor is not a lethal gene - it doesn't cause dead foals. Too much white from certain Kit genes causes lethal foals, and having a higher white factor increases the white from those kit genes until it eventually goes over 100 and the foal dies.
So white factor is only important for lethality when you're looking at potentially lethal Kit crosses - on its own WF is totally fine.Thanked by 1Ritsika -

Yep, unless you are stacking lots of KIT genes you should ignore white factor.

Awesome! So what about W20? I have a few appys with W20 with extensive wf. Will there be a chance of a lethal foal with them if I breed them?DivineDreams ~ 30908

As I understand it, W20 boosts the amount of white a horse expresses. You shouldn't have any problem with W20 and the splashes, Appaloosas, or Rabicanos. It will not cause problems matched with Frame. It might cause problems with some of the Kit mutations, especially those that already put a lot of white on a horse. I'm thinking of White 1 and White 2.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

W20 is a KIT mutation and is only a worry with other KIT mutations and very few of those at that.
