Improving my Show String
  • Hello everyone! I'm a little stuck and would like some advice. I've noticed that typically higher PT'ed, lined show horses do better than lower PT'ed foundation horses, as you'd expect. Back when I started the game and made all my creates for breeding, any that were altered became part of my show string. I'd imagine about 1/3 of my show horses (conservative estimate) are foundation horses. I have a lot of second and third gen babies with higher PT scores who I imagine will be better showers than my foundations. Is it wise to get rid of the foundations (who haven't even leveled off yet) and replace them with the new horses?

I realize that getting rid of the foundation horses (while none individually have very high points) can adversely affect my showing bonus. Long term, what is the better option? I realize I need a larger show herd than I currently have to "pay for" my breeding horses but right now I don't have the resources to buy a ton of barns with real money and definitely don't have the game money for it. I feel like I'm hitting a wall.

  • You might sort all of your show horses by PT score and cull the foundations with scores that are lower than the lowest of your lined neuters. Or, another strategy would be to cull show horses with a PT score lower than 9.5, and hold that as a standard for any future foundations neuters. You could also hold 2nd gen neuters to a standard of 10 PT, 3rd gens to a standard of 10.4 or something like that.

I checked out your show horses and found quite a few with less than a 9.0 PT that are not gathering many points. Culling those would give you more room. You might want to go at it gradually--this week cull all 9.0 and below. Two weeks later, the ones with PT scores between 9.1 and 9.4 with less than 100 points. At the beginning of next game year, all the rest between 9.1 and 94. Such a strategy would make less of a shock to your showing bonus, because the lined show horses would all the time be adding to their show scores (if not leveled off) and so, for the most part, adding more points as they climb the showing ladder and so maybe give a cushioning effect to the decrease in points from losing the low PT scores.

  • I would recommend getting rid of all the foundies. In fact I have a 10.3 PT limit always. You get 2500 for them at auction and can turn around and buy a 11PT++ foal for 2600. I do not have any foundation show horses. And going through my 2G string more and more harshly. This foal crop I only kept a handful of altered 2G but most of my altered 3G
Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.

  • I have a few foundation mares that I'm using for breeding right now that have really good show records, too. I'm getting to the point where I'll have to start culling, and I'm probably going to use their show record as a basis.

  • I'm in the same situation, my show bonus is so tiny anyway so getting rid of foundies won't hurt much but I really struggle to weed through them, so instead I've been selling all my paddock foals to save up for a barn. Having a cut off sounds like the smarter way to go though.

  • I figure as long as you've got the stalls, keep ALL the THINGS! It can't hurt, and if you need a stall you sell/auction/delete the lowest pointed poorest performing horse.

  • Thank you for your help, everyone! I've dumped a bunch of horses into the auction. I went through and culled my show and breeding herd (1st gen mares only for breeding). My showing bonus will definitely take a hit but that's okay. I'm going to see if I can better refine my goals for breeding and onceI have money for the auction go through and finish culling this season's foals.

I appreciate all the help. I think my herd snowballed faster than I expected and I really needed to clean it out.

  • Update: I culled everything under a 10.3 that had less than 100 points and wasn't part of my breeding herd. I cleaned out my breeding herd as well to narrow it down to genes I want to keep with what my current goals are.

I purchased a good deal of show horses with higher PT scores in the auction to fill up my barns. Most of them are foals but once they get older I feel like they will by far out perform some of the other horses I had as part of my show string.

I now have a slightly higher ratio than 3 show horses for every 1 breeding horse. I'm hoping to get more barns once my show string starts bringing in money so I can continue to grow my show string and have room for new horses from this upcoming breeding season.

After all the culling and replacing, I am back up to almost 800 hrs per day as my showing bonus (which is higher than it was before all of this).

Thank you everyone for your help! I feel like I'm much more on track now.

  • Congratulations on your discipline! I'm very impressed. That's better than I've ever been able to bring myself to, one reason why I have so many pixel ponies in my stable. :D
