DP? Thoughts?
  • I have this mare that I've had for a couple seasons now and I think she may be DP. It's hard to tell to me, since shes double sooty. She threw a really dark and dappled foal, who looks about as dark as a mare I know is hom.

    Here she is:

  • 1) You shouldn't colour compare to a horse that hasn't been colour tested.

    2) I don't think your mare has dp, but her foal is het dp. This is because the stallion she was bred to was a dark liver chestnut, meaning he had two copied of dp. He would have passed on one to his daughter.

  • 1) I knew she was bay
    2) Thank you. I kind of figured, since she isn't that dark. I knew she was at least het. because of the stud, I just thought she was showing the colour more of a hom. but the more I look at it the more I see the second mare is a bit darker @ObsidianKitsune

  • I have noticed that the Agouti T [ At] appears blacker than the other A when mixed with sooty. This guy is from a rhythm of four mare but I think he is dark from At , not from one dp gene, if he even has one. He is darker than my known bay, dp carriers with A or A+.

  • Just for comparison, I KNOW this mare is homozygous DP bay.

As for brown horses (At), you will also notice that homozygous brown horses are lighter than het browns which are mostly black with a reddish belly. Similarly, het brown buckskins are darker than most regular bay (A) or homozygous brown (At At) buckskins that have the same darkening genes (sooty, sooty+ and DP)

  • I think Small Dragon 2g is homozygous for DP.
Our Big Idea is just homozygous Sooty. Our Big Eagle definitely has at least 1 Dp gene.
I'm comparing Our Big Idea with this Brown horse I own. It does not have sty, and so must be homozygous DP in order to be brown, because you need two darkening genes (sty or DP) with the At gene to get a brown.

Now this horse has homozygous Sty, and the At gene, but is still darker, so also must be homozygous for Dp.
