Constant Culling
-
Since I just started a few lines I feel that I am constantly culling. Every week going through my herd and culling everything lol. All ages and genders. Has anyone else done This? Or currently doing this?
-
Guilty! I go through and order them by age too and then cull from that way too. If they're considerably less in points than other horses their age they get culled too. I do it about once a week when I can really get on here and then I'm pretty thorough. Especially at the beginning of the month!#4519

You should wait till a horse is leveled off to do any show horse culling. A horse may level up always in a bad spot and never get any points but then level off in a great spot and be a wonderful earner. Or a horse can level up always in the points and level off in a horrible spot and never get another point. Horses level off when their age is roughly the same as their PT, though they do slow way down in improvements as they get close to leveling off. Always best to check histories and see where your horses are compared to others before culling. Earned points isn't the whole story.Thanked by 1supersarah

Don't forget that even if a horse levels off at the bottom of a Level/Grade, it still retains all the points it has collected throughout its showing career and is contributing to your showing bonus, even if it's not gaining any new points.
My strategy has always been to keep as many horses as I have barn space for, buying more barns as I could afford them, and, since the showing bonus was begun, to collect IV's as quickly as I can so that I have them on hand to use to buy more barns if I need them. :DDe gustibus non disputandum. The only show horses I'd ever cull would be ones with few if any points, and only if it was because I needed the barn space for show horses with more points and couldn't just buy more barns. I figure any show horse with some points is contributing in some way, so no point in culling them unless I really really need the space.Thanked by 1ParadisePark

I always check histories as I do it :) if it's something obvious like a 12 year old, 10 pointer who is always bottom of class they go. If they're mid or high range in class I'll keep them around even if they aren't amazing with points total. I order by age to pick out potentially weaker horses. Anything under 8 years is ignored as well.#4519

Yep, I'm guilty too! By age, and sometimes by PT (like if they have 11 PT, but less points than a 10) I normally do wait a bit longer though. I haven't had a horse level out yet, but now I know to go through and do it that way too! Culling via auction gives lots of $ though which is niceBreeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.
