turning this foal to chocolate palomino?
  • how would I turn this foal into a chocolate palomino ? image
    Diamond Freak
  • You can't make him chocolate. He inherited one Ssty and one DP from his sire (since Freaky Fridays are homozygous for both) but he would need another Ssty, and his dam is SS, so there is no way to GM it.
I was jllewis on the old forum.

    Stable ID 88
  • darn that's a bummer
  • so is two stysty hom DP?
  • No, DP isn't testable. Homozygous sooty is just that, homozygous sooty. DP is something else altogether, but it requires sooty to express.
  • Oh ok thank you :)
  • You don't actually need sooty for DP to express. One copy of DP (on a SS horse) looks for all intents and purposes like a SstyS horse without DP. And a SstyS DPDP is a liver/chocolate just like a SstySsty DPdp is.
  • DP horses are so complicated I wish we could test for them lol
  • @StarfireAcres well, we could do it like they did in the good old days! Which is doing crosses to ones with colour they KNOW to see what the unknown contributes. I have to do this with my girl Tempo. She's got two RoF parents, however she has EE. I not only have to see her kids, but grandkids to gauge whether or not she's got any DP in her.

  • It's not complicated at all :) Think of DP as just another darkening gene (like sooty). To make a horse liver chestnut (or chocolate palomino) you have to have at least 3 darkening genes. Either StyStyDP, StyStyDPDP or StyDPDP.

A horse that is SS for sooty will look like SSty if it has one copy of DP, and StySty if it has two copies of DP.

A horse that is SSty for sooty will look like StySty if it has one copy of DP, and will be liver chestnut if it has two copies of DP.

  • Oh cool I kind of get it now. But I have lots of horses that have 3 darkening genes but I posted about them and people said they might have DP but might not
  • You have no way of knowing that they have 3 darkening genes unless you know that at least one parent is homozygous for DP.
  • But the foal above dad was hom DP because he was freaky Friday so is the foal het DP?
  • Yes, any horse that is homozygous for any gene will always pass one copy of that particular gene.
  • The colt you posted has two darkening genes, he's het DP and het Sooty.
