What genes are the most desirable and the least?
-
I know they may vary depending on the owners wants but what is common.
-
Personally, I am always looking for White M, White 8, and Sabino 2 and KP. Frame is always a bonus on mares, but I'd rather not see it on my stallions. As for what I don't like to see, I like everything really, but I tend to stay away from white 1 & 2. And that's about it. Also grey just cause, while cute when young, they turn all while in old age and I like to see their colors.
That being said, I have a little bit of everything in my barns. With the right combos, every gene looks good. -
Desirability is totally dependant on a breeder's opinion.
That being said, some genes can be harmful in some combinations, so they need more careful breeding. :)
And there are some genes that are rarer and generally liked, like DP and the Limited Edition genes. Satin, Splash 2, pearl, KP, and GP, and DP are all genes that can be bought in the GMT lab but can't be found in regular foundation creates. Nexus, Axiom, and the Ices are all genes that were available for only a short time, making them even more rare and hard to get. -
It is not so much that some genes are undesirable, it is more that some are more popular than others. We have many naturally accruing genes that can be bred for. We also have the fantasy genes that are more rare and cost more to own. Everyone that plays has a different idea what is more desirable. If you like chestnuts, then the DP horses which at times produce the liver chestnuts and the black chestnuts. We have brindles, now called Mosaic, which has a coat that is streaked with various shades of a color. There are so many different colors that you are sure to find something you like.
We do have some genes that make breeding tricky, like the frame gene. While it combines with some genes and produces a beautiful horse, it can also wind up with a deceased foal if bred to the wrong gene combination. There is a really good chart on the forum that explains what is safe to bred together.
Some genes can only be owned if you buy a foundation mare or stallion \with that particular gene. Some of these genes have very strict breeding, selling and auctioning rules. Some of these genes include the Axiom, Ice 9, Ice 10 and Ice 13.
The one that are the most desirable are the ones that each individual finds more desirable. To build a really good stable that will become self-supporting, work on breeding quality horses, not colorful ones. With careful breeding it is possible to have a colorful successful stable. Good luck with your stable :)Thanked by 1Ammit -
What Terri says is very true. For most experienced players, a really flashy horse with lots of expensive genes but of low breeding quality for its generation is for all intents and purposes worthless, while a plainer horse of extremely high breeding quality for its generation may be prized and expensive. The real trick is to breed horses with YOUR favorite genes and also of very high quality. Since most everyone breeds for something at least a little bit different, it is really quality that we strive for rather than flash to sell. Also, in this game you don't make your money from selling horses. You make it from building a large and prolific show String that makes you a ton of money by earning lots of points. If you've played other horse games where it's all about breeding for and selling flash, you will quickly find the philosophy here is very different!

Don't think you can just get rare genes and breed them and get money that way. A see people trying to snatch up satin now for that purpose and I can tell you right now that boat won't float.

I know that in real life, I would stay away from breeding frame foals, because the can lead to a color called 'lethal white', of which the color isn't the deathly part, but some sort of disease that is linked with the gene (I think I got that right). In game, I would try and just find horses that produce good showers. That's where the money's at. If you can breed horses that are good showers, then some people will get all into that.
-
Lethal white is not really a disease. The gene that causes the white does so because it is actually broken. When it gets TOO broken (the foal has TOO much white) the foal has complications that go along with the broken gene, and cause it to die, usually before/at/very shortly after birth. Some broken is ok. Break too much and you lose big time!Thanked by 1Ammit

I like most colors and lots of white is a bonus. Just have to be careful of crossing the lethal genes. Only color I avoid breeding is grey as I don't like the markings fading, they are pretty when young though
-
I really like dark chestnuts. If they have a nice bold pattern that's even better. I like varnish appallosas, kitm, i do like grey but usually i turn them into show ponies, also have a sweet spot for duns as well as rabicano. DP on just about any base is my passion though.
Things I avoid or white 1 and silvers. Silver black is pretty but really don't like silver bay. White 1 just looks...odd to me----

I like w2 and w8, as well as black appys. Sadly w2 and w8 don't go well together...Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.
