Yes its separate, they are two different servers and yes you can. You can actually have up to 3 free accounts on one server if you wanted. But more than that is against the rules.

The differences are getting to be fewer and fewer, especially since Ammit very recently put exceptional horses into this game. The primary difference is that HaJ 1 has game years that last 2 months, and HaJ 2 has game years that last 1 month in real life.

Also, I believe, though I haven't actually tracked it, that horses in this game add more points to their show scores with each training than they do in HaJ 1, so that horses of the same showing ability will achieve about the same level in half the real life time. With only 4 weeks instead of 8 in a game year, players playing both games were disappointed by the low levels their HaJ 2 horses were achieving. So Ammit decided she needed to compress the training time here.
