  • I am wanting to start my bay line. I bred these two image

. Both have been Color tested and gotten bay. When I bred them however, I ended up with this little filly. image

How is she black? Is there something I missed in the gene line of the parents that made her black? Also, both parents have a 9.7 PT, which I thought was good for foundation. Their filly got a 10.4! I feel like that is higher than average for a 2nd gen. If you have any idea why these things happened, please tell me. :)
  • Well, from the parents, they must have been Aa or aA, and she got the aa, so she did not inherit the bay genes from her parents, which is why you got a black. If you want to make sure you have a bay all the time, you need horses that are EE AA. (Because if they are Ee or eE you can also end up with a chestnut) so your horses will need to be EE AA to always throw bay.
  • Yep, both are Aa, meaning they are heterozygous and will not pass the dominant agouti(A) all the time. Your foal inherited both recessive agouti(a) alleles, thus making your foal black.
