  • How does w20 effect the phenotype of the horses?

I made this girl today who is homozygous for w20 and medium white factor yet I had to reroll her portrait to get her to show any white at all.

But then there's this guy I made yesterday who has w20 combined with tobiano, Splash, and minimal white factor yet shows more white then any of my other horses (most of whom are also tobiano splash with minimal or no white factor).

So does it only affect other white patterns?
  • I must admit that I'm still new to all of the identified white genes. I found this interesting article: The W20 Project

As far as I understand it, W20 is a booster for other patterns so I think a booster + booster would equal a relatively "blank" canvas because they can't act with each other. They only amplify. But when the booster is added to another gene, specifically a KIT (I'm not sure about splash and others outside of the KIT region), the canvas gets a lot more noise.

    For example:
    image
A homozygous W20, medium white factor mare.

    image
Heterozygous W20, roan, light white factor mare.

    image
Heterozygous W20, tobiano, light white factor stallion. Already has noticeably more white pattern than the previous two mares.

And here is an example of the W20 being restricted by the white factor (which is none).
    image

However, the following horses do not have W20 and show large amounts of white pattern considering their varying white factors.
    image
Homozygous tobiano, none white factor mare.

    image
Sabino 1, tobiano, medium white factor mare.

I don't know if that answered your question or not, but I hope it helped. :)
  • Both W20 and Frame (Olw) are modifier genes. Without a pattern to work on, or with a pattern they cannot significantly modify like roan, they may be silent or very minimally expressed. But with a pattern they can modify, they can significantly change that pattern.

Frame modifies the way patterns like Splash and some White Spottings are expressed by pushing the color to the edges of the body, "framing" the white patches. It may also give jigsaw type edges to the white patches.

W20 seems in increase the amount of white marking within the parameters of the white factor involved. It is more expressed with certain genes (like W10) even with low white factor.

Eventually Ammit is working on removing the lethal interactions of specific Kit genes (frame will always be homozygous lethal as it is in real life) to replace it with an algorithm for foals with excessive white markings being lethal. This would mean you would be looking at a breeding situation that more accurately reflects real life. We aren't quite sure how this will work yet but when it comes in it will make breeding KP horses way more fun because you could combine patterns that are currently lethal together.
