How did you decide....
  • On what to breed for and what traits?
  • It was just personal preference for me. I started with colors, buckskin and heterozygous brown. Then I bought some stallions or mares from other players to add Splash, Tobiano, White2 and Frame genes to my lines and built from there. If I get a Satin, or a Sabino3, I will usually hang onto them, but I don't look specifically for those genes.

I really like Warmbloods and Sport Ponies. I only have a couple of Appaloosa's, and maybe one Riding Horse. I tried the Cob's and Drafts, but decided to concentrate on my others instead.
  • Like paints said, it's mostly just what you decide you like best.
For instance I started out just breeding whatever I like and crossing colors to see the outcome but now I am planning to start a leopard Appaloosa line as well as a Grullo pearl line (hopefully) when I have the money to support them. Also my barn is made up of mostly champagne, silver bay, liver and then dun or roan at the moment and I will probably continue to mess around with colors and patterns until I am more experienced like the other players

I also started with breeding unever for show ponies until I could set my mind to something else to breed. I personally keep a few drafts and then lots of warmblood with a few sport ponies

  • I personally can't settle on a favorite color or pattern, so I breed a little of everything except gray. I mostly breed warmbloods/sport ponies but I have a riding pony line and a draft line as well....but I sort of intermix everything! My main aim to to breed really high quality breeding horses at each generation level...so if one of my color lines lags behind, it is likely to be culled or absorbed into a line that is doing well... I cull my foals and broodmares fairly strictly and any foal with a PT over 9.9 that is snipped gets added to my show herd....as a result I have several thousand show ponies and a nearly self-sustaining income from the show bonus.

If you are having a hard time picking a color, pattern or size to breed for, I would encourage you to pick up some flashy show ponies in lots of different patterns/shades and see who grows on you the most! In addition, if you can pick up older show ponies (say 10 years old with around 500 points) you will see a massive boost to your own show bonus which will help you fund your breeding goals!
  • Ok I will start looking. I have been looking at horses with higher points and are older. I am going to try this breeding season. Then concentrate on my show ponies.
