Culling colts?
-
I'm in the process of culling my 2nd generation colts and it's not easy! I have one that is exactly what I want color-wise - homozygous for both lp and patn1, homozygous black and carries sooty, pearl, and brown. Papered C :( . What do I do with him? Is there a way to justify breeding him in the future without sacrificing quality, or should I just bite the bullet and move on? Advice is much appreciated.

I am slowly trying to become a "better" breeder, and one of the things I have been doing is culling the stallions based on paper level. It has paid off in that I am getting a lot of colts that paper good for their generation, and I am getting Star colts at the upper generations. I have a hard time of it when the stallion physically has it together with color or size, but just cannot paper high enough. I tell myself there is always next season. That is just my opinion, there are some far better breeders on here that may do things different.

Sadly no, there is no way to justify breeding him in the future without sacrificing quality.
I would geld him. If you want quality horses you have to make the tough decisions! The repeated mantra "there is always next season" and it does get easier once youre rolling in colts lol. However there are always those ones which kill you a little bit inside when you hit that geld button haha. I'm STILL upset over my tobiano homozygous nexus 3rd gen papering B. Hes still my favorite foal to date and that was two or three seasons ago lol.
