I haz a confused - Pasture breeding
-
I'm still learning how pastures work, and this is my first season to receive an E Mail alert that says which foal is the best. I checked him out and didn't see anything particularly exciting about him. A PT low enough he would have gotten gelded if I hadn't received the notice, and though he papered B, so did a bunch of my other foals from the pastures.
Here is the top colt: http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=428555
And here is a search of all my papered colts from this year. Except for the top two (who are G3+) there are several that have better PTs AND papered B. (The pasture babies are the ones that still have their ID numbers as names) colt search

I did do a comparison test with a couple of his siblings and he came out on top, does that mean he is better with the magical breeding ability? Obviously it doesn't mean he's got better PT! Or is it a balance/average of the two? Has anybody figured it out?
-
As much as I can remember..... PT is how long he will train before leveling off. PT has nothing to do with breeding ability. So, I would think even with the lower PT than some of the others, he will be the better breeder because of the comparison. Someone may have more info about it than I do though.Thanked by 1ConfluenceFarms

I thought the "best of the bunch" identified the best breeder.SALVISTAR PERFORMANCE HORSES

I have never seen it confirmed in a thread post, but I also believe that the "best of pasture" means the best breeder. My top pasture foals have consistently beaten others in comparison testing. Interestingly, sometimes my best pasture foal will be a filly that is then spayed by SMA. This has happened to me twice now and I'm still not quite sure what this means about the overall quality of that group of foals or about that mare.... However if the best pasture colt doesn't live up to my standards it does make culling that pasture really simple--every single colt gets snipped!
(In some level of confirmation of that impression, I will say that I currently have 8 colts on the Era 3 top producing stallion leaderboard. Of the 8, 4 were the best foal from their pasture. Three of those four are currently 1, 2, and 3 on the board. Only one of the 8 has a PT over 10. They all have Average Foal PTs of 10.38-10.6.) -
Yeah, but what if all the colts meet your criteria?! :/
Mine are all 2G, papered B, and PT is better than both parents (color is not really an issue at this point...they are all chestnut! :P) all NINE of them!
-
That is where the comparison testing comes in. Expensive, but worth it if they all paper the same but you can only pick one to keep,
I would keep the one identified as the best of the bunch for breeding, and probably snip the rest if I only needed to keep 1. I am not surprised at all that your best of bunch comparison tested the best so far. The email already told you he was the best one.SALVISTAR PERFORMANCE HORSES

I agree with these guys, and if you aren't looking for chestnuts, There's Always Next Year! :PThanked by 1ConfluenceFarms

LOL! Rose, I AM looking for chestys! I see it like lab rats...get the base color genes I want set...Starting with StySty, then toss in an S+, and THEN add on the shineys...whites, sabino, GP, pearl, satin, etc. So my early generations are usually pretty blah colored, although I do keep one or two shineys just because! I started my pony line so I could not fuss about colors and just go wild wtih the bling!
@Salvistar....I should have known better, but wanted to use it as a learning experience! :P
-
Great! That's basically what I'm trying to do, only I know I want my lines to be black-based, so I'm doing that with blacks. :) That way I know there isn't a bay allelle dominant over brown sneaking around in a pedigree, somewhere. :P

One thing I did learn from a previous thread I made asking a similar question...you always have a "best of" foal for that pasture, but that doesn't necessarily mean the rest are worse than that foal. You could have multiple ones that are equivalent to each other, but the system picks one of those at random to declare the "best".
-
PT is how good of a show horse they are not how long they will train (that is a myth). Yes it is the best breeder of the bunch. And Dark Mist is correct.

SMA also factors in inconsistency and can spay based on that. It is strict after all.

Hmmmmm....so does that imply that consistency also applies to breeding quality, since mare advice is supposed to be about breeding rather than showing ability?
-
Mare advice is about both breeding and showing. It looks at both numbers not just one.
