KP inheritance
-
So, I understand that to express KP, your foal must have both homozygous KP and two kit genes. But, let's say I have a stallion that I know is heterozygous for KP and has 2 kit genes. Let's say he has W4 and Tobi. Is the inheritance of his KP linked to one of the kit genes, so he always passes it to the tobi foals and never to the whites, or is it inherited separately so every foal has a chance of being het KP regardless of which kit gene they got? Just wondering because I have a lot of unexpressed KP or possible het KP running around in my upper gen herd!

I am pretty sure that KP doesn't "ride" a kit gene. In other words, if your heterozygous horse had roan passed along via its sire, and he got sabino from his non-KP dam, he can pass along KP and the sabino instead of the roan. Am I understanding what you're asking correctly?
I have a couple of horses who definitely carry KP but no kit, and I haven't had enough generations past them to figure out if they can pass KP on, but I suspect that they can, with kit bred into the line further down. -
Im pretty sure you are right but I was wondering since I do have all those potential carriers in there! After that random late generation Dark Sun Rising foal popped KP with no KP in his bloodlines since way way back though, I figured I would ask! Since it's a fantasy gene, I wasn't sure if Ammit gave that info when she set the gene up. That would probably make it too easy, tho!

In real life there is a potential for genes to be "linked" if they are physically located close together on the same chromosome. So for example if a horse's Tobiano and KP were physically located close together on one chromatid of a chromosome and he has roan and no KP on the other chromatid, most of his tobiano offspring would carry the KP (by inheriting the KP and Tobiano chromatid) and most of his roan offspring would not carry the KP (by inheriting the roan and no KP chromatid). It would not always follow that rule though because crossover can occur between chromatids to swap genes between chromatids during meiosis and the KP gene could be swapped to the roan chromatid during that stage of meiosis.
Crossover is more likely to "break" the linkage between genes if they are farther apart, so that is why genes usually have to be physically close together on the chromosome to be considered "linked" and inherited together at a higher rate than normal.
That being said, I do not believe gene linkage and crossover is incorporated into the game. So unless I am wrong about that, your game ponies should all have a 50/50 chance of having your stallion's KP regardless of the other genes they inherited from him.SALVISTAR PERFORMANCE HORSES

Thanks Salvistar. I understand gene linkage and was wondering exactly that! I think I read somewhere that Extension and Kit are linked in the game, but that may have been in real life...I don't remember....

We DO have gene linkage in this game, and there are multiple linked genes.

Oh, how exciting! Do we get any clues as to which genes are linked?
This game just gets better all the time!SALVISTAR PERFORMANCE HORSES

One that I know was discussed publicly on our old forum years ago is the linkage between Extension and Kit roan and tobiano. Extension and Kit are located on the same gene, I believe, and at the same end of the gene so that they travel along together during meiosis. (I hope I've got all that technically correct.)De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."
