Stallion Comparing
-
Might be a dumb question but I'm still figuring this all out lol.
#1 - Say you pasture breed and you get 5 colts total. Through the email you learn which one is the best. Does that automatically mean in a comparison that foal will be better than the other four? That way you don't have to waste the money comparing them all?
#2 - What if your best pasture foal is a filly. What does that say about the other mares and colts in that group? -
#1: Correct. :D
#2 : Not much. You can't compare her to anyone but her dam in Mare Advice and
Strict Mare Advice, and those don't say whether she's good for her generation. -
I've gotten to the point I comp test everyone. If they don't comp AGA my benchmark they get snipped. If a filly does get Best of Foals I make sure to mark it in her notes, what year and what pasture. That's a big deal especially if she comes from my riding DP pasture because that would mean she was the best out of 100 foals.
-
I mark every top foal. Lots of mine will be the best of a pasture of 100, so even if that's a filly, it's worth marking.
-
I mark them all too. That's correct, you don't need to compare that colt to its pasture mates, but it can help you determine where the whole lot is with regard to a benchmark, if you use one. Quite often others from the same pasture will compare "as good as" that colt, because the test isn't exact... but the email is.
If it's a filly, that doesn't help you for colt comparing, but I still mark because it helps me decide whether to cull later... usually (if you're breeding for quality) that foal will be a good one, and I've had it happen where my colts aren't up to her quality. That still results in altered foals but it's not her fault and I will usually give her more than the usual three strikes (altered foals and altered parents are strikes) before culling.... unless I'm still not sure about the line in general, which does happen in second generation, for example. -
Actually it doesn't mean that. All 5 colts could be of identical quality.
