Breeding Help
  • I would like some input on how I can work to improve my foundation lines through breeding. In particular I have one mare who shows very well and has a few decent foals; however, their PT scores are at or just beneath hers. Is there a good method to use when trying to pick foundation studs? Am I just being too critical of my first breedings? Any advice/tips would be greatly appreciated (or recommendations of studs).

Here is the particular mare I'd love to get a quality foal (or two) out of- http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=271812
  • The best foundation studs are C Papered perfect foundations or rank special foundations. (There is a B papered foundation stallion in the game but he is super rare and the only one I know of, he might even be deceased now...)

It would give your mare the best chance to breed to the rank specials or perfect foundations. There are usually lots up for public breeding. If she's still giving you low PT foals it is probably the mare who is not up to snuff. I believe you can get second generation foals in the 10 PT range.

  • A long time ago, a player did an experiment breeding perfect foundations together. The PT's of their offspring ranged from 8.9 to 10.4. Naturally, more fell in the middle than at the ends, but the possiblility is there.

  • Hello Diluted!

I'm relatively new at improving my broodmares as well because I have only a few that have three or four foals on the ground. However, I found these threads to be helpful: link 1 and link 2

For the mare you have chosen specifically, another variable to consider is the stallion used to sire each offspring. As Salvistar said, the best quality breeding stallions are perfect foundations and rank special stallions because their breeding ability is 100%. This can be seen with her foal G2 Sonny Traditions (PT 9.9) when compared to the two foals, G2 Sonnys Too Cool (PT 9.7) and G2 Winning Side (PT 9.3), sired by average C papered stallions. However, these three foals have much better breeding potential than their uneven generation sibling. Uneven, also known as uneven generation, meaning that the generation of the sire does not match the generation of the dam. I recall reading somewhere that this can produce excellent show horses because they often have high performance test grades, but they are often not of superior breeding quality to their sire or dam with the higher generation thus they get altered by free testing.

If you are looking for stallion, I would recommend looking at the breeding ads and sales tab. In the title of the ad players usually advertise the type of stallion they have up for stud and I would look for "perfect foundation stallions up for stud" or "rank special stallion up for stud" because these will hopefully help you breed a good quality foal from your pretty mare. I also see that you own a rank special stallion, Winter Traditions, which is brilliant! He should give you nice quality foals especially if you use your pasture and make sure to let you mare build all the way up to the 30 day pasture bonus. I hope this helps.

    Have a great day! :)
  • Thank you everyone!

I had picked up on a few things from the first breeding to now, but am just trying to get the best grasp I can. I had read about keeping lineage equal after I bred my first foals.
  • I'm still learning the ropes too. It has been a lot of fun. I can't wait for next season to see all the cute foals. :D
