How to get better
  • Hello everyone, I have just started playing, and for now I am a free player until, I can afford a basic or premium membership. Could anyone give me some tips for producing good ponies, such as breeding compared to showing, and what tests i should do for each horse?

    Thanks, and see you around!
  • Hi! You'll get a lot of very long, very helpful replies, but lemme just say that it doesn't matter if you spread your horses over every show you can see. You actually get more points the more horses you beat, not necessarily the placing you get. :D
And as for testing, there are three free test you can do, one test that is 100 hbs, and one that is 8,000. The free tests are necessary to breeding good horses as the SAT (Showing Aptitude Test) tells you if the horse is significantly better at showing than breeding, which means the horse is terrible at breeding, or just mediocre. Mare Advice tells you whether the filly or mare is significantly worse than her mother, or dam. Gelding Advice tells you the same thing, but about the colt or stallion's father or sire. I'm fuzzy on that, and I don't t think it's written in the description. :P
There is a lot of debate about the Consistency test, which is the one that costs 100 hbs, but I don't use it because it only tells you whether the horse will score evenly in shows.
Lastly, there's Stallion Comparison, but that costs 8,000 hbs currently. I don't use it, just because it's so expensive. I wish I could. :P
Those are just the ones that are available to the first level. There are others, but I'm currently in a hotel with my mother trying to sleep in the other bed, so I'll let someone in Australia talk through those. :P

  • One way to get a good starting line up of horses is to visit the Foundation Rescue, Owner 13. All the foundation horses there will be perfect foundations--the best at breeding and at showing that foundation horses can be. They will also add three points to their show score every time you train them and will have the same score both time you show them in a week.

I would look for younger horses--3 year old stallions and 4 year old mares. They will be of breeding age. Check to make sure that the mares have no foals in the current year. This information will be found under their pictures: "Foals this year: #"

You can look for colors and patterns you like. Most of the horses will be chestnuts and bays, but these will make good starters as you learn to play the game. Take time before deciding on exactly which colors and patterns you want to focus on.

Make sure you train your horses every week. Sunday is the best day to do this. Then you can show them twice during the week. As RoseFlute said, keep on showing all your horses even if they don't place near the top of their classes. Unless they come in dead last, they will collect award points based on their place in the class and keep those points throughout their life. Every weekly roll-over between Saturday and Sunday you will receive a Showing Bonus that is equal to 75% of your total points.

For good advice about breeding, see the link for Breeding Info at the bottom of the left menu bar.

  • You can also use the Create a Horse page to make your own horses. Every day you will get a Daily Herd Helper, which will specify colors and patterns for that days DHH. If you post them here in the forum, other people can get a share of that helper and when they do, you will receive the ability to create more of that helper. You can also get shares from Herd Helpers that other players have posted.

You can choose whether to make mares or stallions, horses or ponies, and light horses, medium horses, or heavy draft horses. You can also select their age from yearling to 4 years old.

If you don't like your DHH, you can dismiss it and just make random creates.

Not every horse you create will be good for both breeding and showing, but many created horses will be just fine.

  • How do I find Foundation Rescue Owner 13?
  • Hey Tenor! Welcome to this amazing game!

Like Rose said, the 3 free tests available are pretty much essential to your improvement in the game. Not only will they tell you if your horses are worth keeping as breeding animals, but a lot of us won't buy horses from you (in a sale or at the auction) If they aren't already free tested.

As rose said, the tests tell you a little about your horse's ability compared to something else. So Mare Advice tells you if your horse is a much worse breeder than its mom. Since the goal is to breed better horses every generation, a horse that is worse than its mom shouldn't be bred. same with Geldinf advice. I would always always always recommend that you use these tests.

With Showing Apptitude Testing, it tells you if your horse is better at showing than breeding. As Rose said, this might mean your horse won't be a very good breeder, but I think this isn't the most important thing it tells you. You see, it's very hard to make money in this game just by breeding and selling your foals. The way you make money is by showing and accumulating points. Not so much at the beginning, when the classes are small and so are the prize money and points earned, but in a few months if you focus on it, you can be making 20-40k hbs a week just on your show bonus. I know established players who make 500k a week or more! And horses that are spayed or gelded get a small training bonus, which means they climb the showing ladder faster than horses that are intact. So you should use the SAT and always leave the box that alters your horses automatically checked.

You will need to manually train your horses once every week. This option is under Showing in the column on the left of the screen. You will also need to enter each horse in 2 shows every week. Do this by clicking the yellow arrow to the left of your horse's name in the barns or on their home page.

Breeding is fun and complex and the color genetics in this game are amazing. I highly recommend that you check out your daily Herd Helper on the Create A Horse page every day. Each day you will be able to create some number of horses with specific genes (more horses with less special genes, less if the have more specific or special/rare genes). You can also share your herd helper on the Herd Helper forum page and try to get shares from other people's to create differently colored horses. For special events and holidays the game creator, Ammit, may share one create of a special herd helper with everyone.

Finally, if you are looking for a few good breeding horses to start out your line, check out the Foundation Rescue. go to Search Horses under the Community tab on the left and put 13 in the owner page. The horses in the rescue are all Perfect Foundations, meaning they all have the best possible showing and breeding ability for foundation horses. They will make great parents and should do well in the show ring as well, so having a handful of these guys will help you start your herd off right. Generally they are most available in the basic or common colors, but occasionally you can stumble on a cool pattern or less common color.

If you have any other specific questions, please let us know! This is a very helpful bunch!

  • Under the Community tab in the side menu, you'll see a link to Search Horses. There will be an option to search for owners of horses by ID. :)
