She's supposed to be a good producer... right?
  • This mare has just about the highest average foal performance testing score of any of my second generation mares. She has had two foals with a 30 day pasture bonus, both of whom have PTs of 11 or higher... but they both papered yellow. Is this just bad luck or is something funky going on here?

  • Well...she could technically pass SBA and only be 101% breeding ability, since that would make her better than her parents. Or she could just have had off days when she was bred. It happens, I’ve had 3rd gen SBA passed red mares throw yellows on a 30 day bonus. I would be more concerned if she hits 4 or 5 foals and they all paper yellow/C.
  • In good news, those are two really nice third gen show foals! I would give her a few more chances. I hope she puts a little more effort into her next foal’s breeding capabilities for you : )
  • Off days and bad luck! The actual papering of a foal is purely up to chance within the dam and sire's potential range of throwing. On the contrary, consistently higher PTs generally mean the parent is relatively higher in ability compared to a matching mare, bred equally, who throws consistently lower PTs.

    If she was a colt I'd suggest comp testing her to an experf if you wanted to get a feel for breeding ability, but since she's a she I'd say just hang onto her, no reason to get rid of her :)

  • I think that breeding quality of a mare goes by what PTs she will throw, but not by what breeding quality she will throw. If you use SBA though, it compares breeding quality to showing quality (edit: on the foals, not the mare), and if the breeding quality is significantly lower than showing quality, it will spay/geld. So the quality of the mare is still good, as her quality is determined by the ability to make good showers, not by her ability to make good breeders. To find out if she makes good breeders or not, you will have to test her by breeding her.

    Then she is a good producer. Maribo has it incorrect. If you are a good show horse producer you are a good breeding horse producers.
  • Ah, OK, thanks for correcting me. Don't know where I got that from then 8-}
