Even vs Uneven question
-
I know that whether a horse is evenly bred or unevenly bred can be a huge factor for people in buying, selling, or breeding horses. My question is how picky are most people about definition. For example, I have a 9th generation stud; his sire's line is completely evenly bred, but his dam's line is one generation short on one branch. This makes him technically uneven, but does that really have any bearing on his value? How far back do most people go to determine if their horse is even or uneven?
-
For me, even is all the way back to foundation. one missed line puts them in the bootstrap herd, regardless of generation. I do not consider even or uneven more valuable than the other.ID #21047

Yes - I think you'll find most people think even is filling all those boxes all the way back. I would class them as almost even (and a lot of people myself included would consider that even enough to not end up in a bootstrap/uneven line and to be bred as if even). Everyone is a little different. I would also consider that an evenly bred horse of 9th gen to cost me more than an uneven one, after all it is a lot harder to produce if each gen has passed sba. But I would let you off one missed box, others won't! :D

In my experience (which is only 2 yrs of playing) I have noticed a lot of people are less bothered about even when they like the genes. A "plain" bay horse at 9th gen even will not go for as much as a fancy snowflake or hom sooty+ or black liver etc that is uneven...

For my own stables, here and on HaJ1, I usually keep track of generations up through about the 5th generation. After that, I tend to term horses Long Pedigree, and breed evenly by paper level. However, I must admit that most of my breeding consists of horses up through gen 3. :)

Personally I track all generations by a prefix and breed by matching that letter so my horses are even all the way back.
When I go to buy something I’d most likely buy the one that’s 1 set off from being even than something that is long lined bred to a foundation.
But then I run all my horses through all the testing and get even more bit-picky with my studs after that. More than once I’ve bought horses and had them snipped the next time I threw a batch of new foals in the barn to test them not realizing that they hadn’t been tested. -
I’m like Sandy Creek—I am pretty serious about even pedigrees up through gen 5 (though I have some minimally uneven horses even in those herds) and after that I call them Upper Gen Horses. I don’t have much that’s Upper Gen in my Herd because, like Sandy, I seem to mostly breed up through gen 3. I also keep my Bootstrap Herd but it’s all about high PT and high breeding ability with really no look at pedigree.
Like Dina, if I’m looking for a really Upper Gen horse to add to my herd, genes make a big difference. I am willing to keep some homebreds that are plain if they pass testing, but at that generation there are so many chances to add in cool genes that I really would expect horses to have cool stuff on them. -
I breed even up to Star/Gold, which is usually 5g for me. After that, i try to match high, med or low Star/Gold regardless of actual generation.#28036

I'm with @supersarah, even one line off gets marked as UE in my herd and they are bootstrap, occasionally I've noticed one slip through into my even lines that I bought from other people and didn't do my due diligence and open the pedigree
up, and I probably wouldn't have bought them if I caught it because I've got my own pretty steady supply of unevens at this point that I rarely need to outsource for them. Doesn't make their value any less or more to me; just determines whether I have a need for that horse or not based on where I was wanting their genes. if that makes sense. So far I'm up to G8 in my herd but I've only got the one stud there and finding him ladies is a bit difficult. I've heard a lot of players says even is matching the papers but I seem to have better luck when the papers are one off from each other when it comes to SBA (I think the Goddess Arengee is equally fickle in regards to whether even matched or mismatched papers will actually pass though)God grant me the hbs to buy the ponies I need,
The fortitude to resist the shiny ones I truly don't,
And the wisdom to know there will always be more next time.
