Deciding to Boost
-
Did my first round of breeding last night and produced this lovely young fellow - he is absolutely perfect and producing a lined hom snowflake brindle has been my goal for a while. But, I suspect her won’t pass BA, let alone SBA. I’m tempted to attemp boosting him, but have never done it before and am looking for advice. Any hints or guidelines on how to guess whether it’s worth trying. He’s C and both parents are Exceptional producers, so I wonder if 5% is likely to even be sufficient.
Even though he tested consistent, would making him perfectly consistent help?

Compare him to his sire. If he is worse than him, he will be AGA at best.Thanked by 1ObsidianKitsune

The mark for C papering is 100% and a bit lower (there's show only below that, not sure where). Expros are 105% quality. Even if your boy tests AGA a perfect foundation, you're still not going to be getting him even 1% higher than the parents.
Consistency has nothing to do with papering/breeding ability at all.
I suggest just cutting your losses and attempting the breeding again next year. While getting the brindle is a fabulous achievement and can't really be guaranteed, unfortunately, there's not really any way for the boosting to be worth it, quality-wise.
The only other option I could think of would be boosting him and putting him into a herd of PF (C/yellow) breeders. Since experfs are roughly as good as second gens from perfect foundations (theoretically a good benchmark to test against), after a 5% boost (assuming it got him AGA sire) you could use him as a 2G sire for other red fillies gotten out of C/yellow crossings.
That is, of course, if you're really desperate to keep him - boosts are pretty expensive! But it's one option that would ensure your quality didn't go down for the sake of a shiny, which is what I assume you're looking for :)
You could also use him for bootstrapping by GMTing to a filly (or reverse bootstrapping by breeding to high paper mares) but that is of course if you have or want a bootstrap line.ISO any and all Silver Pocket Watches!
God grant me the hbs to buy the ponies I need,
The fortitude to resist the shiny ones I truly don't,
And the wisdom to know there will always be more next time.Thanked by 1HunterUnderSaddleGirl -
My general rule for boosting is that they have to pass BA first, at least you know the boosting won't be wasted on something that won't pass. Being C paper he will compare worse than sire, if he was exactly the same as a perfect foundation, a 5% boost would get him as good as his sire. But it would take a lot of comparison testing to work that out. You can at least compare him to a C papered stallion and see how he compares. If he is worse that I wouldn't waste any more money on him
Being a C paper I'm not sure he will be worth the cost and you can always try again next season, however if he is really that special, and he at least compares as good as a perfect foundation you could do the 5% boost. I'd personally then change him to a mare as a lower quality stallion could bring the quality down in your herds. But if you used him as a stallion, then I'd breed him to your good G2 red mares and just keep the better quality foals, which might not be that many but at least keeps his genetics -
Oh man - such a hard decision! I mean, it should be easy - he tested worse than a perfect foundation. I have a few het snowflake brindles that did pass SBA. But, it's still so hard! It sounds like he won't pass SBA, even with a 5% boots - but he might get up to B paper. Since we can get boosts with hbs/ivs, I'm tempted to boost him and use him with my C/Yellow crosses. I'll sleep on it!
Thank you all for your advice! I'm going to sleep on it!
