Spurs???
-
So simple situation. I have always ridden without spurs, never used them before. I originally was on the path towards jumping right away, but after switching trainers (which was perhaps the greatest decision I have made for my riding future) I am getting more into my training with different cues and advancing. My trainer wants me to start using spurs sometimes when I am doing my lessons. But I don't know what I should go for. The horse I usually ride is pretty sensitive with leg, push button go horse.
Side note: You can check him out, his name is Verro Dello. I'd buy him if he wasn't for sale for $30,000 (yikies) lol.
One friend of mine said to go for a nub basically, the smallest spur I can find. Another friend of mine said to go for a 1 inch, rounded spur.
Suggestions? Opinions? I have a stronger leg, and I tend to have 'duck feet' as my trainer calls them (remnants of my previous jumper trainer, drives my current dressage trainer crazy lol). I am spending a year or so with just flatwork and dressage before eventually moving on to jumping as a much more solid rider.
Thank you!! <3 -
Back in the day, when I worked at a cutting horse barn we didn't think twice and always wore spurs. WHICH spurs always depended on what the horse needed.
Personally I think people need to learn how to use spurs, just like you need to learn how to post!Thanked by 1supersarah -
Spurs should be an extension of your leg. Being able to use them correctly is part of being a good rider.ID #21047Thanked by 1Ammit

How would one suggest about going about finding the right spur for the horse and rider? I think the majority of us know that a tool is just a tool, and anything can be cruel when used incorrectly.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.
Prices are almost always negotiable. -
You should ask your trainer. Different horse and rider teams require different spurs. But yes to the above. Learning to ride with them is just part of learning how to be a good rider.

I agree... - it varies. Over the summer I had no spurs for my horse, 4(maybe 5" ) long spurs with huge rowls for another horse, kids bumper spurs for yet another horse, ball spurs for another etc.... Between every single horse I had to change spurs.Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.
