Help! Need Ideas, Advice, Inspiration...
  • So, long story short, I have no idea what to do with this account. I've had it since February of this year, and because I keep changing my mind, I've made very little progress in terms of breeding. First I wanted to bred tobiano sport ponies, then I switched to something else, then just blue roans, then only breeding from RS. In short, I haven't been satisfied with these.

On my secondary account, I only use exceptionally perfect foundations, and I absolutely love the strict guidelines it has given me. I've only had that account for a few months, but already I'm seeing success through my third generation of homebred horses.

My main hang up on this account is that I really want to bred KitM, but I can't afford the gene at the moment. I really want to fall in love with some gene/pattern combo that is open and available on foundation horses. I would love to breed for something really distinctive - maybe even something that mirrors a real-life breed.

I already know that I'm not a huge fan of appaloosa, but I love most other white patterns. I really like colors like blue roan, brown, buckskin, and grullo. Basically, what I'm asking is - what would you do in my situation? Any advice for making a plan and sticking with it? And can I please see some examples of your own pretty ponies? Thanks in advance! :)
  • Perhaps a plan might be to concentrate on building up a herd of show horses for the purpose of hoarding hajibucks until you have the showing bonus to the point where KitM becomes feasible. I would be glad to help you out with some of the results of my *Star/Red and Yellow crosses.

Here's an example from the first crop. She's showing at Level 8 Regional.

  • Well, I think you have the right idea in mind. Find something that you love pattern/color wise and then stick to that and make that pattern or set of genes your 'strict guidelines' to follow, in addition to any others you want to use. You could also add in a gene like KitM slowly into your herd in the second generation and beyond. You don't need to buy into it right away on the foundation level and instead just use straws from other players to build your herd. You won't get as many as quickly, that's for sure, but it is possible to do it that way.

Could also consider something like pearl. I love the sheen that pearl gives to horses, you can get pseduo-pearls if they have cream and pearl, and it's an open gene that you can add to any color base (if you like the look of it that is). I breed a lot of DP and for large spotted appys but love adding a bit of pearl here and there.

I finally just finished my own KitM stud. He's been waiting for a gene to finish his look and KitM was it.

  • I didn't start breeding a true line until I had had the game for 2 years! In that time I just played around and expirememted while making bootstrap ponies.
What helped me start settling on lins was simply learning about then (ex: learning what made liver horses, before they were my favorite but didnt known how to make them)
While continuing to explore other Gene's by breeding my RS with HHs that looked interesting. I now have 3 solid lines and a lot of fun cross overs. Most of them were because I had a specific mare/stallion that I loved

This was one of my first stallions with a purpose, he was my first herd sire for DP

  • Oooh, those pearls are super pretty. @Ren, you're making me like appaloosas with those leopard pearls.

My favorite horse I've ever bred is pearl -

He's an example of what I would love to have down the line (I would prefer no splash or frame, so I may have to GMT those off before breeding him).

I have been trying to build my show bonus by snipping a lot of my higher-pointed foundations. I have a decent chunk of money saved up right now, although of course some of that is budgeted for SS... I don't want to do anything too drastic right now, maybe just build up a new broodmare herd over the next couple of months.
  • A lot of my Foundation stock is pretty basic (aside from the fantasy genes). I've put hom pearl and splash 2 for color on them. Tobiano is a pretty one to start with. After that, I will look in the auctions for (usually mares) that have fun genes that I don't have a foundation with (as long as they are even and good paper for their gen). I can usually pick them up for fairly cheap, and then I get new genes in my herd.
  • Also, I know there are players on here that would absolutely love to help you out with straws (I mean, it is the holiday season after all!) from white m foundations. In my experience, I change what I want to breed every three days- and the cool thing about buying straws is that you don't have to commit to buying the whole horse. What if it turned out that you didn't like the horse a week, or even a year after you made it? And considering that white m is extremely expensive, it might be nice to give some straws a "Trial Run." of any of that made sense, lol.. I know you don't have the money, but instead of just saving for white m, maybe explore your options first.

Some other pretty genes that I think you might like; White 3. Its actually on sale right now, for seven tokens! (Lemme just say.. It looks gorgeous on liver)

    -pearl (as others have said)

I also have a wide assortment of foundation straws, if you pm me the specifics of what you wanna try I'm sure ill have some straws that meet the requirements. :) (I have closes genes, Pretty white genes, fantasy genes, snowflake.. You name it!)
  • S+ is always fun
  • Good luck with things - don't be so hard on yourself - it has taken me 2 years to finally decide on my DP brown (and black) with white markings :)

  • Thanks for all the ideas, everyone! I'm thinking maybe browns and buckskins - at one point I really wanted to breed buckskins, but brown has really been growing on me - @ColorGoodStables, that dark silver brown stud is so stunning.

Everyone who offered straws, I will definitely keep that in mind! Once I figure out a bit more of what I want, I will definitely be on the hunt for straws.
  • @KaleedoscopeAcre thank you! He will always be one of my favorites. Pretty sure I shed a tear when he passed.

Good luck on you line hunt!
