If any catch your eye or "inspire" you then you can write a story (please please please!) or draw, or do any type of artwork or creative something and I'll sell the horse to you for 1HB. Last time I did this just about everyone did a piece of artwork, but I've seen a lot of stories on here lately, so anything creative goes. Open indefinitely. Can post up to one entry a week. Horses are first come first serve.

Link to previous time I did this contest for inspiration

    http://hj2.huntandjump.com/forum/discussion/51096/established-show-horse-giveawaycontest-please-comment/p1

Please note I would rather not change the horses names as sometimes that is the source of inspiration so when I add it to the chat please only purchase the horse you requested.

So I actually write poetry as a hobby! I thought I'd flesh out some lines that have been bouncing around in my head if that's ok :) I've been working through some depression lately, and this is mostly about my struggles with that.

    Inertia
From the scorch of the stars
From the black of the void
    Cloaked in mantle grey
    The sky is white
    The world is still
And in this bed I lay

    Wrapped in "what ifs"
    Swaddled in "buts"
I need to find some way
    To part the clouds
    To greet the sun
Yet in this bed I stay

  • One stormy day, an older man was wandering through the auction pens, searching for a suitable match for his granddaughter. It was going to be her first horse, and while he didn’t want a young wild one, he wanted her to have fun. As he looked into each pen, he kept shaking his head, finding horses either too young or too old, some that looked sick or a bit too spirited. He had lost hope until he reached the very last pen, where one horse was standing in the rear corner. The poor horse had a sad, defeated look to her, and looked to be covered in mud in weird splotches. He entered the pen, stretching his hand out with a sugar cube in his palm. The mare stretched her neck out, snuffling at his hand, before gently lifting the cube and munching it quietly. Speaking softly, he rubbed her neck and realized what he thought was mud was actually a deep, rich chocolate color. Making a decision, he went to sit in the bleachers to await the start of the sale.

An hour later, he loaded a quiet mare into his trailer, promising her a nice large pasture and warm barn with clean bedding. When they reached the small farm, he unloaded the mare and led her to a large box stall where a hay feeder was filled with fresh hay, a large bucket of water, and a trough of oats was waiting. With a sigh of content, the mare took a long drink of water and settled into her new home.

A few weeks later, you wouldn’t have known it was the same mare. The old mans granddaughter was cantering the mare around a large arena, her eyes bright and her body filled out with good meals and love. His granddaughter had squealed upon seeing the gorgeous little mare, spending hours bathing and brushing until her chocolate and white splotch covered coat shone. They were entered into the local show in two weeks, and they looked like they would do just fine.

    The Valentine

    "Sol and the Prince" (1/2)

Solemines carefully set up the desk. He couldn’t use inkwells with screwed-in stoppers anymore – you need two hands to open those, and he still hadn’t figured out how to use the remaining two fingers on his right hand effectively enough to handle the stone inkwells. So corked stoppers it was, but they had a greater tendency to spill if knocked over. Spilling your inkwell all over the day’s records would be counterproductive and run the risk of upsetting Quinalaos. Sol didn’t want to upset Quinaloas after everything that had happened, so he played around with the location of all the writing tools until he was reasonably certain the inkwell was placed where it was unlikely to be knocked over but would also not result in dripping ink across his parchment. He slowly sank into the heavy wood chair, hoping his leg wouldn’t give out before he was all the way down.

“Just don’t say anything unless you are directly spoken to. Just sit in the corner, take the notes, write down who comes in and who goes out and what their problems are. You’ll basically be invisible, you won’t have to move anywhere, and he’ll probably stop holding audiences by lunch.” Quinalaos had instructed Solemines when he gave out assignments that morning. “But most importantly, don’t say anything.”

Solemines had floundered since coming to the capital two moons earlier. His injuries still kept him from most positions, but his apparent inability to keep his mouth shut had already caused half a dozen minor nobles to go howling to Quinalaos for his blood. Solemines was trying. He just didn’t understand why being “polite” and “respectful” frequently involved so many little lies. Why should he have to say things he didn’t mean to “keep the peace” and “be nice?” His sister’s parting words still rang through his mind daily. “Watch. Listen. Learn everything you can. And always be honest.” In Sol’s opinion, all those little lies, the softenings of the truth, and those things left unsaid often created more problems than they were worth.

So here he was, in one of those essential but uncoveted jobs that kept the King’s court moving smoothly. It didn’t actually need a mage, just someone who could read and write, but it didn’t require walking, stairs, or a sword. Solemines figured that even he couldn’t mess this up. It wouldn’t be a full day at court anyway. With the King on his seemingly unending pilgrimage to the great holy sites in Rakia, the Crown Prince Joachim was governing in his absence. Unfortunately, the Crown Prince was well on his way to being known as Joachim the Joking King. He focused more on bringing in performers and going on hunts than he did on actual business of the Crown. Since the Prince had planned a hunt and feast in the field the next day, both Quinalaos and Solemines suspected that the Prince would end court audiences early.

The audiences passed in a monotonous blur. The Great Hall filled with various nobles, courtesans, and merchants. The Prince arrived. Minstrels performed, to general amusement. This noble requested an annulment of his marriage. These two houses were squabbling over which fields were theirs. Minstrels performed, to general amusement. That merchant complained that Lord d’Lorium had delivered mules instead of horses, and was promptly laughed out of the Great Hall. A delegation of Kuastans wanted to the Prince to weigh in on the ownership of olive orchards that the city of Agostinium had recently claimed. The Lord d’Jatium accused the young Lord d’Kraba of stealing his youngest daughter. The Lord d’Kraba accused the Lord d’Jatium of breaking a marriage contract after the he had paid the bride price. Minstrels performed, to general amusement. Sol sat in his corner, took notes for the archive, and didn’t say anything. Shortly before midday, the Prince ended open court and held a few private sessions. He ended by calling for Serena d’Felsa. Sol bent closer to his papers. Quinalaos’s words echoed in his head. “Don’t say anything.” Almost there.
  • "Sol and the Prince" (2/2)

Serena arrived, beautiful as ever, and looking on the verge of tears. Solemines felt for her. Ever since the Prince had latched onto Serena, he had openly courted her, calling her the most beautiful woman at his court, in all of Rakia, and possibly in all of Limina. He had musicians sing to her, he had poets write sonnets for her, he had tumblers deliver flowers to her in the streets. Everything he did just sent her into tears. Very, very publicly, he courted her, despite knowing his father wouldn’t return to officially broker a marriage deal for him for at least a year, even assuming the King let his only child wed a girl from such a low house. And here, he was, Sol saw, coming down the throne and the dias to take her hands, speaking eloquently the whole time.

“Oh, my sweet, soft northern breeze, my sparkling oasis, my jewel among pearls. I have wilted every moment since last being at your side…”

Sol stifled a snort. Seriously? It was like the man heard the tales bard told and assumed they were directions and not stories. Don’t say anything.

“…and every moment we are apart, it just seems that we are truly meant to be together. Souls bound together. Everyone thinks so. Isn’t that right?” Serena didn’t respond.

The silence dragged on. Sol looked up, checking to make sure they were the only three in the Great Hall. The Prince was looking at him, eyebrow raised. “Wait, was that for me?” Don’t say anything.

The Prince responded with a laugh. “Who else is there? Are we not the most perfect match for each other? What do you think?”

Sol did not anticipate this turn of events. Don’t say anything. “You’re asking me?”

    “Yes.”

Sol struggled to his feet so he could address the Prince. “My opinion? My honest before-all-the-gods, honest opinion?” Don’t say anything.

“Yes!” Irritation had entered the Prince’s voice.

Don’t say- Bugger it. The Prince was, quite literally, asking for it.
“I think you’re being an ass.”

Serena clapped a hand to her mouth, her eyes going wide, darting between the Prince and the black-cloaked mage in the corner. The Prince’s shock was clearly written on his face.

    “What did you say?”

Buy the hoof, buy the horse, Sol mused. He looked up at the Prince, his one good eye staring directly into the Prince’s eyes. “I think you’re being an ass. Everybody – at least, everybody who listens to court gossip for more than a week – everybody knows she is in love with Erasmus Boggus of Anksa. And everybody knows he’s in love with her. Everybody knows this, and either you don’t care to listen, or you just don’t care at all. Her father won’t hear one word of a marriage between his daughter and the younger brother of a minor house if there is even the tiniest hint of a chance that she could get a royal bastard or even a royal wedding. Much less risk irritating you for sending your intended paramour away from court. He’s greedy, and he’s not stupid.” Sol glanced at Serena before continuing on. “And I suspect, but don’t know for certain, that he’s threatened his daughter with something if she refuses your advances. Hence the tears.”

The Great Hall suddenly seemed quite large and empty with just the three of them in it. The silence was practically echoing by this point. Solemines let out the breath he didn’t know he’d been holding and started packing up his supplies. The unused parchment, the paper weights, the blotter, the pens, the troublesome inkwell…

“What are doing?” Sol looked at Prince Joachim, confused. Was it not obvious?

    “Packing?”

    “But where are you going?”

Sol paused, considering. “Back to the Valley, I imagine. That’s where most of the disgraced mages from court are sent. Lord Quinalaos likes to make points.”

“Don’t. Just…stop?” Sol stopped packing, and hovered uncertainly by the small desk in the corner. He couldn’t decide if that had been an order or a question. Was it worth the effort of trying to sit down again?

Prince Joachim looked at Serena, back at Sol, then at Serena again. When he spoke next, his voice was soft, with none of the pompous grandiosity from his earlier speech. “Is that true?”

Serena, still fighting back tears, nodded slowly. “I d-didn’t think you were serious at first. Then my father…” She trailed off, breathing raggedly.

Prince Joachim called over his shoulder to Sol. “Is Erasmus still in Shadoin? Or has he returned to Anksa yet?”

“He was here during open court,” Sol answered. “Beyond that I cannot say.”

“Tomorrow,” the Prince told Serena, “make sure you, Erasmus, and your father are all at court. I will find some way to tell him it’s not your fault that I no longer pursue you. I promise.” The girl practically threw her arms around him before realizing what she had done. She retreated respectfully, thanking him, and departed.

Prince Joachim turned to Solemines, who was by this point was leaning on the table to take the weight off his bad leg. “Everybody knows?” Sol nodded. “What’s your name?”

“They call me Solemines. Or Sol.”

    “Saraki?”

“My father was. Now I’m just from the Valley. The Saraki version is Soliminis, anyway.” He hesitated. “You do know you had planned a hunting trip for tomorrow, yes?”

“Not anymore. Are you—are you always that direct?”

“Yes. I prefer to call it honesty. I think it’s better than dancing around the desert.”

“That’s…not untrue, I suppose. Will you always be that honest with me?

“Always. I am with everyone. Just don’t ask me questions you don’t want to know the answers to.”

Prince Joachim nodded thoughtfully. “Then come with me, Solemines, and tell me what else everybody knows and I do not.”

This lady inspired me - a combination of her name and her sire's. If her daddy is a prince, surely she's a princess who will inherit his riches!

That being said, I of course had to give her wings and a royal crown :x

"Sorry I hung up on you, Jen."
Jenny tucked the phone between her ear and shoulder and dabbed some more yellow to the sunflower she was painting. She sighed before replying. "No, it's ok Allison, I know you hop in and out of reception when you're driving through the mountains. Where are you headed this time?"
"A conference in Rochester. Gabe Martin is going to be presenting his research there, and my boss thinks that his findings will help move the lab forward."
Jenny smiled "Remember Chem 111 freshman year when I had to be lab partners with him?"
Allison giggled. "Ugh, you guys killed every assignment between your brains and his charisma!"
"Yeah, he had Dr. Finney wrapped around his pinkie finger!" Jenny chuckled and added more paint to the canvas.
"I'm not really sure about this conference. I mean, he's smart and all, but I just wish he weren't so stuck up about it. I'm not looking forward to having to hear him toot his own horn for three days. Just give me the science and let me go home, ya know? Not all of us turned out to be neuroscientists."
Jenny reached to rinse her brush and fumbled the phone. She caught it with her paint-stained hand and quickly stuffed it back under her ear.
    "What was that?" asked Allison.
"Nothing. Just dropped the phone on accident..." Jenny sighed. No, not all of them were neuroscientists. She had entered college alongside Gabe and Allison as the smartest and most creative student in her class. Somewhere along the way she had lost her motivation to continue with STEM and dropped out of school to paint and tend her vegetable garden.
"... Sorry, Jen. I wasn't watching what I was saying."
"It's ok, Al. We all went different ways. That's ok I guess." Jenny picked up her brush and loaded it with more sunshine yellow paint.
"You keep saying it's ok, but are you sure you're happy? I mean, you loved chemistry in college, and now you're in a totally different place in life. All three of us are."
Jenny's brush faltered and a bit of paint made a yellow splat on the floor. She had no reason to be unhappy with her life. Her paintings consumed her, her garden was flourishing, and she was going to be able to harvest the cucumbers she'd been tending next week, if the sunshine held out. But she couldn't help wondering what her life could have been like if she'd stayed in college with Allison and Gabe. Maybe she would be in that car with Allison. Maybe it would be her research being presented in Rochester. But she would never know.
    "Are you there, Jenny?"
    Jenny didn't respond.
"Jen...? Hello, can you hear me...? Sorry, I think I lost you." The line buzzed, then clicked. Silence.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
    To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
    Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
    Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

    "We Don’t Speak"

That could be us don’t you know-?
Sharing meals, sharing food, sharing drink.
Walking together at the park, sitting fingers interlocked at the movies.
    That could be us.
    But we don’t speak.

“Like ninety-percent of their problems are because they didn’t say anything,”
I complain after all the films. The heartbreakers, the action, the horror.
“That love triangle could become just a simple line again,
    And it would’ve-
    But they don’t speak.”

Like, what could be so hard about it? Kids, teens, all hate the silence.
Like coffee pots with no filters, they blurt out whatever thought comes through,
Sputtering everywhere, spraying words, not caring if people nearby get burned
    But come adults?
    They just don’t speak.

I still think the world’s problems come when adults didn’t speak.
When things that should be said, that wanted to be, that needed to be said
Were left unsaid in niceties and politeness, in great big gaps of silence
    I know why we hurt
    But I don’t speak.

And yet here we are, separated by a mere twelve measly inches of space
That space may have been warm once, but now it freezes with indifference
I used to run my fingers through your hair but now I don’t dare
    And in the end,
    We just don’t speak.
