Do you have pricing formula(s)?
  • I was just wondering - does anyone develop a pricing fomula for either sales or breeding for themselves? Anyone willing to share theirs? :D

  • I do have some for selling. First off, I start with create price, then I add on price of testing (100 for colour, 500 for pt, 1k for BI). I don't tend to add on money for comparison testing however.

Then I'll have a look at what genes the horse has. DP I tend to sell for about 5k, S+ and anything more special like that can go up to 10k. Limited genes (mine is SpM) however never get that price hike due to the market being limited.

Even so all of my prices are negotiable so if someone messages me asking for a discount on a certain horse, I'll tend to go down. Only exception is if it's below create+testing.

    Prices are almost always negotiable.

  • My rule of thumb on sales is I sell homebred breeding stock for 5k, fully tested. This is usually excess colts or fillies that don’t come up to my standards, mares I’m culling for AFPT may be sold this way though mostly they go to auction. Foundations are either create price or at whatever I think is the going rate for a Rank Special.

Show ponies I sell at create price or just give away.

Straws are 750 each unless the stallion is super special and still quite young, then they might be 1-1.5k. Eggs are usually 3500 or cost if they’re from a mass flush.

If someone seriously couldn’t afford my prices, I would negotiate with them. But my prices are usually pretty low compared to similar stock from other players, mostly because I have a huge show bonus so I really don’t need to raise funds through sales. Having a fairly set price for everything means I don’t have to think too hard about selling off stock (especially those excess colts), which is important when you’re turning out the volume I am. I have over 2000 mares in pasture now, so a streamlined process is key for me!

  • On my secondary account when it was still able to create yearling show hh horses with points I’d sell them BA tested (free with basic upgrade) at create price +500hbs / 100 points. The horses near the top of the range I sometimes bumped them to the next level pricing.

    0-99points - 2500hbs
    100-199 - 3000hbs
    200-299 - 3500hbs
    300-399 - 4000hbs
    400-499 - 4500hbs

I had a running post with a search of my sales horses that I’d bump up when I added more to the list and I usually didn’t have trouble selling them for those prices. I usually kept the 500+ pointed horses or held a quick auction for them. Although any left over horses just got tossed in an auction the next week to keep the low pointed horses moving out of my barn so I could fill it with higher pointed horses.

For more tested horses on this account I start at create price and add test costs so they typically end up around 4100hbs for a create without points.

I don’t typically sell off much stock other than the odd create and I have a good bonus so tend to price lower so that the horse will be able to earn back their purchase price within a few months (quicker if they’re continued to be shown and points added) and not exceed the potential profit of the horses lifetime at the current daily show bonus it holds.

  • I don't have a good formula for selling but here are my breeding prices for mares.

    1000 1G yellow
    1200 1G red
    1500 2G red
    2000 2G blue
    2500 3G red
    3000 3G blue
    3500 4G blue
    4000 5G blue
    6000 6G blue
    10,000 6G gold
    Add 500 for special genes.

  • I have a good show bonus so don't need the money from selling, so I just tend to price on what I think the seller can afford. I don't sell a lot anyway
  • This is really interesting, thanks for all the replies!
