How do snowflake genes work?
-
Hi all,
I’ve just brought a beautiful Snowflake Stallion and just wondering.
What genes are involved in snowflake?
How does it work with breeding? Hoping to be able to breed snowflake babies. -
Horses need to be homozygous for the snowflake gene, as well as having at least one copy of LP for it to show.
To get snowflake babies from your boy, you’d want to breed him to mares that you know are carriers for snowflake (they have a Hom SNF parent) or exhibit the gene themselves. -
you could also use het mares (het snowflake horses have to have one homozygous parent, just for reference) with a homozygous boy, and almost always get homozygous babies. (you can pm me, if youd like, and ill tell you more/ give you some free straws)

SquishLime is correct: you require hom or het snowflake mares to go with your snowflake stallion in order to get snowflake bbies. Have you joined the Snowflake Breeders club?Breeding quality pintaloosa riding horses and ponies - and having fun with it!

Snowflake is one of the hidden genes that do not show in the gene test, so the only ways to know you have a carrier is if they have a homozygous snowflake parent or produce a homozygous foal.I was jllewis on the old forum.
