Sometimes horses suck
  • Especially when they tear down the electric fence at 12:30 in the morning in a wet and muddy pasture, electrifying the ENTIRE ground in the surrounding area. My dad heard me bolting out of the house freaking out and came out to see what was wrong. I thought that my mare had attacked my sister's horse again (which i still don't know if that was the cause or not). So when i went to check my sisters horse i saw a spark coming from a t-post that should not have a hot line on it... I looked to my right and literally wanted to cry. They managed to rip one t-post clean out of the ground, broke 7 of the plastic insulators (the pieces that keep the line off the t-post), and tore the line off 4 or 5 posts. 2 live lines were just laying in the mud. My dad helped me get everything back together even though he has to be up for work at 7. So blessed to have that man in my life :)
My mare is making my life incredibly difficult recently. All because she can't stand my sister's horse wearing a blanket. Ugh, mares 8-|
  • Yikes were the horses okay after wreaking all that havoc :-O
I'm a mare owner too...definitely had more then one occasion of wanting to cry. Plenty of memories of being out very late after work putting fences back up, or battling storms to keep everyone safe. You have to be just a little bit crazy to put up with it all.

  • Oh lord I feel your pain! I too had a mare once, she drove my sisters gelding through an electric fence and 5 wires snapped...all because of a blanket! Wasn’t at midnight, but was during one of our cold snaps and it was 15 degrees out. Only reason they were in the field was we were cleaning their stalls out and she went and did that. Hopefully things got settled down for you and you got some sleep

  • There is nothing quite like broken fences and loose horses in the middle of the night to make one wonder why they keep horses! I am glad your dad was able to help you get things fixed and be a good sport. Mares - sigh. ;)

  • Both mares were ok. Thankfully since the ground was hot, they didn't get out. I'm sure my mare must have chased my sisters mare into the fence and it got caught on her blanket or something. I finally got to sleep at 3am lol but i was extremely paranoid the entire night after that. All was well this morning. I re-divided the pen with my dads help and put the girls back on their respective sides. But this time i hotwired the middle line so my mare doesn't just step through the middle again 8-|
  • So glad they are ok — geeze. You know how many times I’ve said “Horses are jerks” under my breath? Lol! I totally feel your pain! We recently had to re do our fence— it used to be just electric w T posts but our stud colt kept going UNDER the fence when he was a foal... I thought something was wrong with the fence because how did he not get electrocuted? Well we checked it — my husband actually touched it and it popped him good so we figured maybe our colts fluffy foal coat was a good enough insulator? Lol All the other horses steer clear and as he got older it did start to electrocute him but he didn’t stop messing with it... ended up doing a lot of damage to the fence to the point of bringing it down a few times and getting loose. He’d paw at the fence and see if he could get under it like old times which created grooves in the ground and the wire would pop off the yellow clasps. He’d scratch his mane off on the T posts. Sigh... All kinds of stuff.... What we certainly didn’t want was the stud getting loose around the mares... so we had to go extreme and get wood post fencing with electric along the insude... So far he hasn’t done anything to the fence.... knock on wood.
