Query about White Factor in breeding horses
  • Hey all,

I was just wondering if a White Factor has the same lethal effect as the frame gene on the resulting offspring?

I tend not to breed two 'WF: Extensive' horses together in fear of this happening, but I just want to know if this gene has this effect or any effect on the survival of the resulting foal.

    Edit:

And is it possible to reduce it through breeding?

    Thanks,
    TBH

  • It does. Let me find the link....

Always looking to buy foundation brindle drafts in black, blue roan, grullo, classic champagne, etc.

I work a 7day on 7day off schedule and my activity here will reflect that.
I can be very scatterbrained and forgetful so if I don't get back to you in a decent amount of time just poke me.

  • Thanks @BlackWyld, but with the two-way-table Ammit supplied, is that regarding the genes of one horse (i.e. a horse with Tobiano and Roan will have a Safe WF), or regarding the predicted WF of the resulting foal? (i.e. a Roan horse bred with a Tobiano horse will produce a foal with a Safe WF).

  • Just a note, please don't @ Ammit unless it is an emergency. :)

There is a discussion on general WF that is touched in that thread.

I am going to let more experienced players have a go at explaining it because they will do much better than myself.
I am glad you asked this question because I was looking for a good discussion on it.
Hopefully someone with more knowledge comes along soon.

  • White factor, by itself, will not cause a lethal foal. There needs to be a presence of white spotting genes, as well as the possibility of splash and frame thrown in the mix to cause lethal foals. Certain genes, when homozygous, will always be lethal. Frame, splash 2, and splash 3 will always be lethal together. I also believe w and w2 will be lethal (but double check that link above).

    For example:
    If I bred this stud
    image
    G5A BlkrLvW3S3

    To this mare
    image
    G3R milestone 1548251

And the foal received two copies of W3, a copy of splash and splash 3, and a copy of frame combined with both parents extensive White factor, the foal would likely not survive. A good rule of thumb is, the more white on the parents, the higher the risk when bred together. The white hairs signify something that is broken, and the more “broken” somethings you have, the more likely it is to effect something vital.

    Hope this helped a little!

  • A quick note, the Appaloosa gene does not affect White factor.
  • @FallenShadows714, it did thank you :)

  • The way I've understood it, white factor basically increases the risk - so two plain horses with no white genes but with extensive white factor will be fine, because there's no risk to be increased, but in horses with white genes it increases the chance of the lethal foal. On the other hand, with dangerous white genes like w1 or w10, if the white factor is low enough there should theoretically be a small chance of an okay foal that got, say, hom w10. Still doesn't make that a very safe breeding, but there are a couple hom w10 horses in the game.
