Need help with herd reduction!
-
I need to reduce my herd but I can't decide who to get rid of is anyone willing to look at my horses and help me decide? I'm going for lots of color and show performance
-
First off, what color are you going for? Go ahead and list what genes you like and which ones you don’t like. That will help a lot in determining who to get rid of.ISO any and all Silver Pocket Watches!
God grant me the hbs to buy the ponies I need,
The fortitude to resist the shiny ones I truly don't,
And the wisdom to know there will always be more next time. -
If you are also going for show performance, are you expecting a certain PT, AFPT, or paper level at each generation? Like Lally said, find out what colors appeal to you and what specific quality standards you have, start by culling those, and see where you end up.ID# 43830

I love tobiano, splash, and appy and grullo is probably my favorite color but I like having a bit of all lol...I'm still new to this and trying to figure everything out
-
And I'm a free account so I can't do the paper level testing and all...kinda makes this harder to figure out
-
Oh, yeah, that would make it hard. Can you save up for an upgrade with IVs? You might be able to start by selling or auctioning any horses that don't have any of the patterns you mentioned.ID# 43830

Acquiring some of everything is normal when you're first starting out -- you have to SEE it all to figure out what you want, right?
I have found the best way to decide what to cull is to figure out where I want to go. Then it is easier to see which horses are going to help get me there, and which aren't.
If you like grullo with appy, tobiano, and/or splash, go with that! So look at your horses and pick a couple of boys and a bunch of girls who are black or grullo based and/or have the patterns that you want. Agouti is pretty dominant, so if you like grullo but not bay dun, you're better off kicking the bays to the curb.
Does that help?
