Are stallions held to higher standards than mares?
  • This is actually a 2-part question...
Is it harder for stallions to pass BA and SBA than mares?
Are they held to higher standards and is this the other reason for mare-lag other than that they are breedable younger than mares?

Reason for my question and part two:
Four months ago I purchased a mare (i could have sworn she was blue-papered at the time but I could be wrong). I GMT'd her into a stallion and gave a 1% breeding boost. He only papered B and after several seasons of breeding I have determined his boost didn't seem to do much for him.

This was the only case where i gmt'd from mare to stallion. Other two cases where I have turned stallions into mares, they papered the equivalent as before.

I have a new 3g blue-papered filly I am seriously wanting to turn into a stud but I am worried now that she/he may not paper an equivalent "A" if the testing standards are in fact higher for stallions, (and I have made a rule for myself not to spend real cash on anything but my premium upgrade anymore so no breeding boosts allowed).

  • If she is blue papered then as a stud she will be A papered. Most of the time studs are held to hire standards because we can compare them against their sire. Mares we can't compare against their dam. I personally let that be used against me and i kept Red 3Gs from Red 2Gs even though i only keep A 3G studs. So i recently culled ALL my 3G Reds. If you want to turn the filly into a stud, i say go for it but maybe also post a link so we can see the horse in question.

Back when i started playing, colts were only compared to their sire and fillies to their dams when put through strict/breeding advice. But Ammit changed it over a year or 2 ago so that foals were compared to BOTH parents which made it so less passed testing but those that do are slightly or highly better than their parents. Does this all make sense?

  • Yes makes sense, thank you @AHayesHorses

  • Wow she's gorgeous. So yes, since she is Blue papered, as a colt she would paper A :)

  • The game tests mares and studs equally.

Mare lag come from the fact that 1 stud can breed 50+ mares a year so you only need a few studs to cover your whole herd. This causes players to be picky about what ones to keep so using comparison testing, colour and/or Paper requirements they trim down their studs to the best they have.

Mares on the other hand typically get a free pass on some requirements that would be a snipping offence had she been a stud.
  • As far as mare lag goes, with BA/SBA now comparing to both sire and dam, mare lag is now at most only roughly one generation behind if SBA is used, as the foals have to be as good as the sire to pass. Unlike when fillies only compared to their dam.

Although I have noticed that some time ago SBA was "turned down" so more foals pass. So the foals that pass can now be slightly worse than both sire/dam and still pass SBA.

  • Thanks @Kintara! I was wondering about the "turned down" thing because i had noticed that several foals in tje past month or so passed BA and then papered below parents...I thought that used to mean an automatic snip!

  • As for players being picky about their studs, it reminds me of a saying I've heard from rabbit breeders.

"A good herd buck is half the herd. A bad herd buck is all of it."

Once I have entered horses into the auction, I do not remove them.
