Instead of a hamster...
  • Instead of a hamster, like I originally was planning on getting...a friend from work wants me to take her Bearded Dragon. :O Do I need him? Of course not. I also didn't need the hamster I was planning to get, but I have a soft spot of lizards, and I truly hope I can take him. My parents have agreed, but I he cannot be taken immediately by me, and my friend is going to try to hold him until I can for sure take him. :) I'm so happy, though. I have always waned a lizard of any type, and yes! I'm about to do some serious research about them. :D

  • Absolutely do your research and be honest with yourself! But if you decide you can take him, Beardies are delightful. Quite personable compared to most reptiles.
  • I love beardies! Ive had 2 ♡ great first time reptile pets, great personalities, easy to take car of (read up on it...they do require certain things). If you get it, feel free to message me with questions
  • @CrewCut
    I shall. And cool.

So You mind if I message you now? I have some questions at the moment to ask, just to be safe here.

  • A hamster is a cake walk compared to a bearded dragon. They require a lot. From heat, to light, to their diet, to calcium, terrarium space etc.

Its a lot of research but please do a bunch if you do plan on taking him. Research it once and research it again. Make sure you familiarize yourself with MBD and impaction. Its also expensive to get started if he doesnt have everything he needs. A lot of people don't have their beardies set up properly with correct lighting and dont feed them a good diet.

I rescued a bearded dragon in April. She was VERY impacted and just sick. I dropped a good $200 for her UVB, her basking light, the light fixtures among other things. I was giving her baths 2+ times a day and syringe feeding her for a month. She died on mothers day. She was too far gone to save I guess and definitely would have never made it through impaction surgery but she did get better than what she was when I got her and at least knew love and warmth even if it was just for a short while. Before the last week of her life I actually thought she was going to make it. Then she slowly seemed to get more quiet and depressed and I had made the decision if it lasted more than two weeks she would be put to sleep. But she didnt make it until then. Im still heartbroken about it. I went into it knowing she probably wouldnt make it. But I got attached very quickly.
I only just last week cleaned up her tank and everything. But all I did was clean it and put everything neatly inside and on top. I didnt move it. But Im also still not ready to get another one or any reptile right now. And its been almost 4 months. One of the hardest pet losses Ive experienced so far.

Now if everything is done right and they arent fed bugs that are two big or put in a substrate where they can eat it like sand etc and they have the proper heat and light and calcium and diet they usually do great.

Not trying to discourage you just trying to share what I know and make sure you do the proper research so the animal has absolutely everything it needs and you know what youre getting yourself into!

Thank you for all the information. I have done a little research tonight, but it's a lot for my "reptile-new" brain to consume and comprehend.

  • Turns out I'm not getting him. They decided to keep him rather than find him a home, as they fell in love with him.
