GMT project
-
After creating a liver ExPer stallion last week, I’ve been saving my HBs to be able to modify him into something even more special. So far I’ve added a copy of cream to turn him into a chocolate palomino, as well as dun because who doesn’t love dilution genes?
SL Tribal Council XP
Here he is so far. Don’t mind his name, I created him while watching Survivor... Anyway I’m kind of unsure where to go from here. In a perfect world I would love to add another copy of DP, as well as my other favourite gene goodies: roan, pearl, sabino and rabicano. However I can be rather impatient and if I were to wait until I’ve saved enough HBs for that many GMTs I wouldn’t be able to breed him until he’s 12!
Another DP: 10 tokens
Everything else: 9 tokens (I think)
It’s looking like I have to choose one or the other, so I would like opinions from people as to what they prefer in a foundation stallion- hom DP or a variety of genes for potential foals to inherit? As this is my first GMT project, I’m interested to hear how people choose what to add and know when to stop.
-
I try to think about what I want from a GMT project's foals. If you add another copy of pearl and line-breed his foals, you will have cremellos, pseudo-pearls, and pearls by gen 3. Or would you like to focus on pattern rather than base color? Then add the pattern genes you like.ID# 43830

Base colour is pretty important to me, I absolutely love chocolate palomino and would like a herd of those with cool patterns. But I guess there’s no point having an extra copy of DP if it’s hidden under hom pearl or hom cream once I start breeding the chocolate palomino pearl babies together.
I did forget to mention silver as well, if I go with the second option he’ll eventually be getting a copy of silver to hopefully flash up any Ee foals he might have. -
Personally I think that because GMTing is so incredibly expensive you should only be concerned with how you feel about certain genes.
I have written out a list of genes I love and when I feel ready to start GMTing I usually Already have most of my goal gmts set aside then I look for the horse that is already closest to my goal so I need to do the least amount of work.
If you like chocolate palominos I’d start by making sure he was homo in whichever genes needed for a horse to be chocolate palomino then add sabino and/or pearl. If you want roan, rabicano or silver just breed him to mares woth those. It’s not hard to find homo roan, rabicano or silver mares straight out of HH’s without the need to gmt -
That’s a good point, I guess it’s just a matter of wanting all of those genes in the one horse so that I don’t have to wait multiple generations for foals to start looking the way that I want. I’m so impatient oops. Waiting for my Gen 2 mares to become breedable was tough!
I must be one of those people who knows what they want and want it all now, not in 6 months time lol.
I’m going to be saving like crazy but with my daily show bonus still sitting under 4k, that means lots of auction breed and dump! Which isn’t an issue except for the fact I’m going on a ski trip in New Zealand next week so will miss the rest of pasture breeding season if there’s no WiFi. So I won’t even be able to breed him until next season at the earliest, even if I do just put pearl and sabino on him. -
What Base color are you really breeding for? Chocolate palomino? Chocolate palomino pearl? Chocolate palomino pearl dun? If Base color is more important to you than patterns in the full scheme of things, I would decide what Base you’re really looking for and try to make him Hom for as much of that as possible.
If, for instance, you’re all about choc pal pearl, I’d actually look into acquiring Cremello mares (there are still some Bone Fires floating around) and consider making your boy Hom pearl. I also think Hom DP might be very well worth your hbs.
If you’d prefer more variation, with some patterns, and if you’re planning to breed both for red based and black based horses, I’d ignore the other DP and focus on those other genes.
If money is an issue, I would definitely make a list of what is top priority and what isn’t and add them as you can afford to.
Also, remember that pulling straws counts as breeding and will close him to further GMT work! -
Thanks for clearing it up for me a bit. I maybe like chocolate palomino slightly more than with pearl. But the idea of making him hom pearl is a good one as for some reason foundation mares are never created with pearl so it’s easier to get the cream from them.
I suppose my other option is to GMT my FF filly into a stallion and take the frames off her, add a copy or 2 of pearl. But then I only have a C papered stud. Then I think I could GMT my 3yo Hidden Gates WB filly into a stallion, add an extra copy of DP and take off both the Llp; but I would also have to work out how many tokens it takes to change her into a draft since I don’t want predominantly WBs.
I have too many options and it’s overwhelming. I wish I could do it all because I’m awful at making decisions! The dream has always been to have a hom DP stallion eventually so maybe I should save up for that and just use this boy the way he is. -
I found an answer to my problem. Silly me didn’t realise that this Hidden gates mare would be GMTable as she didn’t have a keeper foal last season. She already has Dun and just had to pop up her height to take her from cob to draft.
RS Borderline
After next auction I should be able to turn her into a stallion, then it’s just a matter of taking off that second copy of LP and maybe making her hom pearl. My question with that is, does it take a token to remove the Ccr, then put Cprl on for 2 tokens or can you go straight from Ccr -> Cprl for 2 tokens? -
You can go straight from Ccr to Cprl!
I’m glad you found a horse that was simpler to use for your project, and cheaper!
For future reference, changing height or bone weight both cost 1 GMT each. For foundations, as far as I know, you can change height and bone to anything on the Foundation scale. For lined horses, you can only change them within the scale of what could have been thrown by their parents together (so for instance you probably can’t change the offspring of two drafts enough to make them a riding horse). -
Fantastic, that’s a relief for sure! I should have made her max height then, I wasn’t certain if I could choose any I liked or if you could only move a couple inches at a time. Same with bone density but I figured I’d go with this mare who has Dun rather than the younger WB Hidden Gates mare I’ve got.
I still want that hom DP liver stud one day though, so I could turn this mare into a stallion
SL Fancy That
Or use my Freaky friday filly who is younger. But then my question is, do RS horses that paper yellow have higher breeding ability than the regular HH creates like that girl? -
Rank Specials that paper C/Yellow are always Perfect Foundation quality with 100% breeding ability. A regular create may also be 100% breeding ability or may be lower. There is no way to tell. (Except ALL foundations in the Foundation Rescue are always PF quality (or better maybe? Do ExPros or ExPerfs end up in the rescue?), even if they aren’t from a PF or RS herd helper).
So if you’re going to be spending some GMTs, I’d recommend going for the Freaky girl just to guarantee that breeding ability...but that’s just me. If it’s going to be significantly more expensive then it’s a toss up... -
The only thing with using the FF filly is the extra 2 tokens needed to get rid of frame. But then she is 3 years younger which probably makes up for that as I’ll be able to breed her for longer once I do get her how I want.
