Isnt he supposed to be homozygous...?
  • So I had just recently gotten a het nexus mare, and I had some extra funds, so I thought why not splurge and breed her to a homozygous stud.

Well, the outcome wasnt that great, and I am a little confused. The foal passed BA, (yay!) but is only het nexus.. Did I miss something? I thought that it was almost impossible to get a het out of a homo and a het pairing :-/ I mean, he is still super cute though.. He just might get a sex change lol

  • Not surprising at all, really. He picked up the Nx gene from his homozygous father, but not from his mama. He got her N.

If both parents were hom Nx, then you'd be assured of a hom foal, since neither parent would have anything else to contribute.
  • Ohhhhhh duh #-o that makes sense lol. Thank you!

  • You're most welcome! And he really is lovely. Gorgeous balance, so tall, beautiful color, and super classic tobiano markings.
  • It's a 50-50 chance of getting a hom from a het x hom pairing. For future reference. :)

    Hom x hom = 100% hom
    Hom x het = 50% hom & 50% het (statistically)
    Hom x none = 100% het
    Het x het = 25% hom, 50% het & 25% none (statistically)
    Het x none = 50% het & 50% none (statistically)
