  • Is frame something I have to watch with sb1? I got so many fillies, but this first group are to go with

  • A foal that is homozygous for Frame (has 2 copies) will be Lethal. This isn’t an issue with this stallion, as he doesn’t have Frame, but it may be something you need to worry about If you want to breed the foals from these crosses to each other. Many of us just try to keep Frame out of our stallions entirely, which makes Hom Frame impossible.

    Where you start to get into risky Kit crosses is when horses get two Kit patterns (any white spotting, Sabino, Tobiano, roan, including W20). The Kit Lethality chart lays out what crosses are more risky. Adding Splash or Frame into the mix increases the risk of those risky crosses, but only if the horse inherits two Kit genes.

    So, as long as you aren’t mixing the really risky Kit genes, like W1, W2 or W10 into the Sabino with splash and Frame also in the mix, you aren’t getting too risky. One copy of Sabino with no other Kit genes and one copy of Frame should be very safe!
