Manual?
  • Is there a players manual anywhere? I feel like all I do is ask questions. Sorry!
So for mares they paper as what? Yellow and red and some other colors?
    And stallions are what a b c?
I know we have been over ot alittle as to what people keep around but is there a scale listed anywhere?
    Thanks guys
  • At the bottom of the menu on the side of the page, there's a link to breeding information and the rules. Aside from that, we just give each other advice. :P We don't mind answering questions, but if you don't want to ask anymore, you could go through the old forum posts and see if there's any new information to you there. :)
  • Mare paper levels from lowest to highest are: failed, yellow, red, blue, and *gold.
The roughly equivalent stallion paper levels are: showable only, C, B, A, and *star.

Mares have to have at least 3 foals to be papered since their papering is judged on their foals' qualilty. Stallions, however can be papered at birth since their papering is judged on their own hidden breeding ability number.
I was jllewis on the old forum.

  • Mares paper: Failed, Yellow (most foundation mares), Red, Blue, *Gold.

Stallions paper: Showable Only, C (most foundations), B, A, *Star.

Stallions are papered strictly based on their individual merit as a breeding horse, so can be papered at birth. Mares are papered based on the quality of the foals they produce, thus they must have a minimum of 3 living foals to be papered. As a result, the quality of the stallions you breed your mares to greatly affects where they paper.

I personally want my mares to paper Red as foundations. I want my gen 2 colts to paper B and my gen 3s to paper A. My benchmark stallion for Gen 2 is a B papered stallion who compares As Good As my A papered gen 2 stallion, so I have very high standards for my gen 2 colts. Similarly, I have a Gen 5 *Star papered colt and my other gen 5 is an A that papered AGA him. Not everyone is as strict. I intend to be similarly strict with my mares, hoping for Blues in gen 2, certainly no later than gen 3 and *Golds starting in gen 5. Generally it seems to me that most players give their mares an extra generation to paper at the level they expect their colts to...

There is no official comparison test for mares, but Average Foal Performance Test scores can tell you what you need to know. The AFPT of a horse tells you their breeding quality, so if you have 2 mares in the same generation and papered the same being bred to the same stallions or to stallions of similar quality, you could pick the better mare based on her higher AFPT.
  • You would think red would be after yellow not the other way around. I have to keep reminding myself that when I go through my mares.
  • Hidden there was a big long post about how people make decisions about culling foals earlier this month. It included, for some people, their papering cut offs for different generations. It could be helpful for you.

http://hj2.huntandjump.com/forum/discussion/comment/9144#Comment_9144 It's linked to my comment but the entire post was really good. My culling method is based on Abbeys and she presents an excellent explanation of her method here.
  • Awesome. Thanks. I am trying to screen shot so I remember what I have learned. Lol
  • lol...I re-look up old posts all the time. The post on lethal combinations I probably check twice a week!
  • Me too, Cheers. :P Bookmarking is helpful, too. :D
