What is the deal with Splash 3?
-
Can someone explain Splash 3 for me in how it acts differently than splash and splash 2. Is it rare or special? I can't find it on the genetics guide and it can't be added in the GMT lab, so I'm assuming it's a limited gene?BREEDING DARKNESS (ok black liver but it sounds cooler)

It is a rare and limited gene, yes. Have only been on sale a few times. It looks the same as splash and splash2.

Splash 3 was just on sale with Snowflake and the ice genes in the GMT lab. I’m pretty sure it’s lethal when homozygous, unless it’s GMTd on.

Thank you everyone. Does anyone know what makes it special? Why pay for it when it looks and acts the same as regular splash?BREEDING DARKNESS (ok black liver but it sounds cooler)

I believe that it causes more white than Splash 1 and Splash 2. Note, these are single examples. There will be variations.
splash 1, minimal white factor
51717 Dk Bay Splash 5
Splash 2, minimal white factor
Smokey Sacrifice
Splash 3, minimal white factor

From what I saw it does throw more white than a normal splash. I put it in my lines since I love splash but only when it's exaggerated.
This is my boy, he's a minimal white factor but with w20 it's really flared it up and made him look pretty spectacular!

Ah, yes, I forgot, Splash 3 has as much white as a homozygous splash 1 or 2.
Here is the announcement about spl3:

@Maribo thank you for the link that perfectly answers my questions!
@Bourbon thank you as well--that was an important clarification that it can show lots of white without the high white factor. That's very significant!BREEDING DARKNESS (ok black liver but it sounds cooler)

Here is the detailed description of Splash 3 from Ammit for anyone curious who wants to skip the link...
(Released December 2014 only via straws initially):
"Our holiday gift to you I have sent every member a straw from horse number 3 The Brindled Cat. So each of you have a chance at his splash 3 gene.
The Brindled Cat is a Brown Splash Brindle and the founder of Splash 3. Splash 3 is a more aggressive mutation of MITF (the same gene that causes regular splash). Splash 3 horses have as much white as normal homozygous splash horses. This aggressive behavior makes it homozygous lethal with itself and lethal if combined with splash 2. However splash 3 and splash 1 look lovely together"

And here's what you can get with the Splash 1 and 3 combo... With W20 as well.

This is my recent acquisition that sparked my look into it. He also has w3 which I'm starting a line on as wellBREEDING DARKNESS (ok black liver but it sounds cooler)
