I was just sitting here thinking that KP And GP both are untestable genes yet both have a breeders club. DP is an untestable gene but doesn’t have a breeders club. :-/ not sure how it would work; if it’d only enter Hom DP or would it enter both Het and Hom.... Hmmm :-?EasternShowBarn

...and Liver is the only "application" of DP that changes the color description.... I think. Does the word chocolate show in palomino color names?
-
Chocolate does, and they can be entered in the club, too. Bays and champagnes don't get a name change, but red duns do.

I mean just overall DP not just liver or chocolateEasternShowBarn

Would surely make it easier to figure out if those black based horses have DP...Thanked by 1BlackWyld

GP and KP Horses can only be entered in their clubs if the gene alters their physical appearance—if they’re expressing the gene. Carriers or those that are Hom but don’t express the gene (however subtly) don’t get to be entered. Similarly, DP most strongly affects chestnuts, Red duns and palominos. These are the horses that qualify for entry into the club. Bays, who show their DP with much more subtlety, and blacks and champagnes in whom it’s virtually undetectable, don’t qualify. There was some debate when the Liver club was added (relatively recently) and it was agreed that this way of distinguishing made sense.
I like that DP is hard, that you have to develop an eye for it. It makes it all the more fun when you stumble upon a DP bay or DP buckskin, can recognize it and snatch it out of a sale or let someone know their horses is DP! -
Like what Cheers said, not all horses with Kp and GP go in the clubs, so KP needs two copies and two KIT genes, GP needs two copies and must be at least Bay/Brown based. So the Liver club is the same, they need be red based and have at least 3 of sooty/DP combined. So you can call it a DP club in your own mind if you prefer, as that's what it is!

My favorite discovery is when a black horse turns up with DP. I've had a few other the seasons come out of HH, and I have a few that I bred. It's exciting!
I also like that DP is not easy, especially in agoutis, because it's so much fun to learn how to recognize it. I have sooty and non sooty DP in so many colors, but I need to breed more!#28036
