Should she be brown?
-
I just made this girl from a homozygous brown herd helper and like it says she is hom for brown (At) but she color tested bay. Is that a glitch, shouldn't she color test brown? Can someone explain this?

I assumed that HH was for homozygous At, the brown gene, as opposed to phenotypically presenting as brown coloured.
If you do a search of the tattoo there are other bay horses the same as yours

I think you need sty as well to be brown, I have hom brown mares and only the sty ones are named phonetically brown. This applies to the few sables I have as well.ID #21047

That's interesting. I was not aware of any gene needing sooty to show.
-
There was something about bays showing up in brown herd helpers, but I can't find it, and I don't remember the explanation! Someone who has a functioning memory should be along shortly to explain! :P
(I think it has to do with the fact that she is Ee? <- pulled out of thin air, do not accept it as fact!) -
Non sooty hom At always show as bay. And they pretty much look like bay, so kind of makes sense. A sooty hom At will be labeled brown and a non sooty het At will be labeled brown.#28036Thanked by 1Lallyhop

The color label is based on the phenotype not the genotype. Yes this horse has the brown gene but it is a bay horse not a brown one.
