Omg! Guess What, Guys!
  • My mom told me this morning, she doesn't care what my dad says...but since my birthday is coming up in August (the 8th), if I want to get a Hamster, I can! :D I have been wanting a hamster for years I'm so excited! I'll be 24, and the last hamster I had, I was like, 7, so getting one will be so exciting! I needed something to make me happy today. So, thank you mom!
    Love,
    Spry
  • Aw congratulations! I have never had a hamster...or guinea pig...or any small rodent that my mom knew about. I adopted a little white mouse once.

I've been debating getting my kids a guinea pig like, mostly so I can have one. :))
  • @JheydaStables

    Thank you!

And awwh. Mouse! Mice are adorable!

My mom has a guinea pig... And i used to raise guinea pigs... I much prefer a hamster. :)

  • @SpryOfJune

The cat we had actually protected the mouse, too. It was cool.

    Lol fair enough
  • @JheydaStables

Awh! So cute! I have a kitty. Hopefully, if/when I get a hamster, she's nice to him/her. Lol.

    Lol!
    Love,
    Spry
  • That's the same day as my youngest. I hope you pick out a great little buddy.

    Omg, yay!
    And thank you!

  • Congratulations! Make sure you have a cage that seriously locks for it. Hamsters can be the most amazing escape artists.

  • Ohhh how exciting, I am SO jealous!! I love hamsters, they are so fun! I always had dwarf hamsters, and I still think they're the best :)

My grandmother gave me a cage specifically made for hamsters.

    Haha. Okay.

  • That's exciting! :D
  • Enjoy your hamster! :D

@JheydaStables - Get a guinea pig, it's totally worth it! Get lots of guinea pigs! Guinea pigs are cool!

    Thanks...

  • I forgot to add that hamsters are cool too! Do you have any specific breeds in mind? :)
  • @EdgyEmu
No, not fully. I was more only thinking of a teddy bear hamster, or one other I can't remember. Lol

  • I'm strongly considering a Golden Hamster (Aka: Syrian Hamster). (*)

  • I had several Teddy Bears and Goldens; they are both very good breeds. If handled properly, they are the sweetest and so furry. But if you want a hamster to cuddle, do not, under any circumstance, get a Russian Dwarf. Those buggers are monsters. They are so small, but I always needed super heavy duty gloves to work in their cages or I would get savaged. Even changing their food is a risk to fingers and sanity. So yeah, go Golden or Teddy. No matter what you get, I wish you lots of love and good memories with your furry friend.

  • @ShelteredShadows
I've known two Russian dwarfs... I was terrified of both... (They weren't mine) even the owners were almost deathly afraid of them... But they loved them...
I used to have a teddy bear hamster, he was black, and I named him Mojo Jojo from the Powerpuff Girls. Lol. I was a kid. I saw a Golden Hamster last year, and his cute, fat body was so adorable, I fell in love, and regret that I couldn't get him. Lol
    And thank you.
    Love,
    Spry
  • I had a Russian dwarf and 2 winter white dwarves (not sure what the official name is). All of them were the sweetest little things, though the Russian had a lot more energy. The winter whites were more chubby and cuddly.

  • Update: the real name of winter whites is Djungarian hamster.

  • From my time working at a pet store, I’ve had plenty of experience with hamsters, and the difference between the regular size and the dwarfs is that usually the dwarfs need to be handled sooner and more frequently to keep them from becoming nasty. The big ones tolerate handling better if neither is accustomed to it, but I’ve been bitten by all kinds - the little ones just get more nasty when they don’t want to be handled, over all. They’re the ones I’ve had the deepest bites from. On the other hand, they all have the capability to be super sweet if handled properly and often, with positive reinforcement. I suggest treats, handfed only. ;)

God grant me the hbs to buy the ponies I need,
The fortitude to resist the shiny ones I truly don't,
And the wisdom to know there will always be more next time.

    Thanks!

    @Lallyhop
Thank you. That's a lot of good information!

  • I never had a hampster, but for about 3.5 years I had a jumbo rat named Henry. Previous to that I had raised mice for a few snake owning friends I found keeping 3 the perfect set up for timing, but they didn't have the permanence Henry did. He did tricks.
