KP nd DP Genes
  • Hey good morning. I was wondering how you know if a foal acquires DP and or KP genes for the parents? I seen someone mention somewhere about testing for it, how do you go about that?
  • You can compare your horse against other known DP horses to see if they are the same shade but both DP and KP are hidden genes.

KP is only visible when they inherit 2 copies (one from each parent) and 2 copies of Kit genes (can be the same or different kit genes. Tobiano, roan, whites etc.) then the horse will get large cloudy spots across their body. Sometimes you may need to reroll to get bigger visible clouds. Also when the horse is homo KP with the required Kit patterns they are registerable in the Kit Promoter breeders club
  • KP foals have got to have 2 kit genes and 2 copies of KP. Its usually pretty easy to tell as they get a grey 'cloud' over some of their body. DP can be a little trickier, but a red based horse with DP will often have liver or chocolate in their name (must have three darkening genes for this to happen. Usually two sooty and a DP) and their shade will be visually darker. Its a bit trickier to tell in black based horses but it can be done, just takes practice :)

Edit; Bandit1119 beat me too it lol
  • Awesome! Thanks, that's what reroll is for?!
  • A reroll just changes the way the patterns are expressed on your horse's picture. Anyone can be rerolled, but there might not be much of a change with some of them.
  • It also costs money (100hbs I think) so make sure you are prepared for that
  • I track DP from lines that I know have it. Liver, chocolate, and super oddly dark critters with only one copy or no copies of sooty. I don't have a perfect eye for it, but I've got it narrowed down to a lot of "probably"s. Lol things that really make it hard to see DP are pearl, varnish, hom LP, and mostly white bodies.

As for KP, it's also hidden. So they need 2 KP AND 2 kit genes. Which kind of stinks but it is what it is. I keep all het KP and try them with my hom KP boys and hope for the best. Hom KP is usually fairly obvious due to the clouding pattern they get on them. Het is invisible. Youd have to check lineage for hom.

Once you get the genes picked out its relatively decent to "track" what is going on with the lines.

  • @RubyJoFarm I have a related question I just had a Smokey Black foal and was wondering about any possibility of DP, still learning on here with that particular gene, with his dam being a cremello I didn't think anything of it but the "smokey" part had me paying extra attention to his genes and that's what got me curious of the possibility.

  • Smokey black is a black with the cream gene!
  • Smokey Black is E? aa CcrC, and appears to be black because Cream is more effective on red pigment than it is on black pigment.

Smokey Creme is E? aa CcrCcr, homozygous cream. Here's an example of a Smokey Creme.

When I was just starting to play Hunt and Jump, I once bred two "black" horses and got a palomino! What?! I double checked. I had forgotten that the dam was a Smokey Black and both parents were Ee. The foal got both recessive extension copies and the dam's Ccr. :D
