Genetics Question. (Het/ and HOM genes)
-
The answer is probably obvious, so im sorry if it is!
If a foal has two parents that are heterozygous for a certain gene and the foal is either hetero/or doesnt carry the gene, could he/she be genetically modified to be homozygous (or hetero, if the foal doesnt originally carry the gene)? Im wanting to do some gm work on a foal or two, but before i do i wanna make sure that its possible. Any advice helps! :) -
It depends on what the gene is. Any gene that is normally in the GMT lab can be swapped onto the proper allele for 1 token. The genes that are purchased with real money, and any of the genes on special in the lab right now are not able to be added on if the foal missed it. Example, snowflake. You can’t add on that second gene the foal missed.

One time I bred a het dp liver stallion to a het dp liver mare, and got a plain hom sooty chestnut. I gmted him hom DP. :) One copy from the dam's side, and one copy from the sire's side.ID: 16853

(Commenting from my other account, lol) @CWScowgirl thank You! I had a HUGE suspicion that it was the case, but I really didn't wanna spend gmts if it wouldn't have worked.
@FallenShadows714 yup, I knew that the special genes could only be put on foundation horses! :) that kinda does suck though, lol. It'd be nice if you could gm the missing gene onto foals ;-; -
@MariaChapinFarm3 As a note when GMTing on missed DP (or KP for that matter), if you know the foal carries one copy, but you aren’t sure which parent it came from, you can attempt to add it on from both sides. The GMT lab will not remove DP, so if you happen to try the allele that already has the DP, it will not charge you the token and you will know that parent passed their copy down. I did that on one of my boys and was crossing my fingers and toes that it wouldn’t remove the copy of DP I knew he already had!
