Pricing stallions for public breeding
  • I was just curious as to how most people decide to price their stallions when selling straws or doing public breeding?

For me I have a base price depending on generation, and then depending on how many extra shiny genes they have such as silver, satin, or patterns I add a certain amount per allele that they have.

I am mainly trying to decide if I am pricing too low or too high.

  • I base on what genes and generation

  • I always start them low in their first year of breeding, no matter what they paper or their generation. Just to get a few foals from them. The only problem with that is, if you want people to breed even and the price is low, some people breed their foundation mares to your second through seventh generation stallions, and don't geld or spay as asked. If my stallions don't produce good show horses, then they get gelded. Then I go by papering, generation and popular color/patterns after their first year. If it is a stallion that is in one of my favorite lines, I make the price a little higher than for the usual color/pattern horses. I also have some that are 'In House' only.
  • And three of my boys i think are inhouse only right now
