How many until you are sure?
  • I have a second gen stud, chocolate Palomino pearl color (makes it hard for me to tell het or hom DP). When breeding to only Hom Sooty mares, how many foals that come out with 3 darkening genes would it take for you to think the stud is hom DP? His sire is a FF, dam is a het DP chocolate Palomino. Hence why I’m not sure he’s het or hom DP.
  • All of his foals should be Het DP of he is Hom :)

  • Well that’s the thing, I’m not sure if the second gen is hom or het. I know he’s at least het because of the sire. What I’m wondering is how many foals that have three darkening genes would it take before you assume he’s hom DP, if the dams are only hom sooty
  • Because if I only breed a couple mares, say 4 or 5, I would think it’s just good luck that all picked up the DP. But would you say 10 is a fair number?
  • I would go for 10 at least :) Then if you get even one that's not DP in that group, you'll know the sire is only het.
  • I always try for at least 10 when test breeding.
