Culling for inconsistency?
-
I have seen many wiser and more experienced players advise to cull breeding stock for inconsistency. However, I have also seen that PT is not related to breeding ability. If I'm breeding for paper quality, should I cull inconsistent mares or not and why?
On a semi-related note, what paper quality do you expect from 3g foals? All my 2gs are red or b-papered.
Thanks in advance for the advice!

Ive heard someone say inconsistency can snip a foal if said foal is to inconsistent but I think Ammit has said its not true?
For me:
3G foals from Expro line Should be Blue or A
3G foals from normal Should be Red or A (B if superior to sire)●▬▬▬▬▬▬๑۩۩๑▬▬▬▬▬▬▬●

For 3G I'd like to see blue/A's, but I allow reds/B's to slip by.
Inconsistency can lower the pt of a horse and it is slightly inherited. Not to mention some people cull by AFPT. So if you've got an inconsistent mare that you're breeding, she's more likely to throw inconsistent foals with lower PT, thus lowering her AFPT.
And it's another excuse to have another reason to cull. Some people have over 100 foals that pass all other testing that they need to whittle down. That is the main reason why I have gotten rid of inconsistent mares.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

Right now my 2G foals are mostly red with one blue.
My 3G are mostly blue with some red.
My 4G mares are blue with one gold.
I have A and B papered studs of each.
I have bred inconsistant mares and gotten consistant foals. But right now I am starting to get a little more strict. Maybe I shouldn't be saying anything since I have only been playing since November.

Thanks everyone! This has been helpful. And Xceptional, you have been playing twice as long as I have, so your advice is appreciated!ID# 43830

My culling for inconsistency is a hold over from long ago before the show system changed. To be profitable a horse had to place in the top half and the classes were much more expensive so most people would micro manage their herds a bit and pick and choose which horses would show that week.
I used to have a spreadsheet with all my horses that would calculate when the best week to renter a horse and what their score would be within a point or two. Inconsistent horses would mess with the system, they could get that score and place in the middle or a higher score and place at the top or more painful to my bank account would place lower and cost money (higher levels could mean a few thousand dollars lost)
I’m pretty sure Inconsistency was also one of the first testing available to figure out if a horse was good to keep around. (I’ve played HJ1 since 2006 so the order of testing released can get mixed up in my head lol) -
@Bandit I remember those days, though I started playing in 2011. :D
Thank goodness Ammit invented the showing bonus!De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

Lol I actually sort of miss the old days some days if only because it kept my herds much smaller when I had to go update everyone’s last show score and move horses about into show or rest barns lmao.
I ended up going over and focusing on WHG for a few years until it closed because I enjoyed the hands on aspect until I finally got the hang of the new show system and came back.Thanked by 1ConfluenceFarms -

Western Horse Game.
Made by Ammit so was similarities to hunt and jump but there was more variety in the show classes (different western riding events, barrels, poles, cows etc). I think there was 10-12 talents you could breed for (speed, agility, cow sense, etc). Each class would look at 3 of the talents to decide how they placed.
I mainly focused on all round showers rather than breeding for a particular class. I loved working on earning my horses ROMs by selectively showing them to earn more points in different divisions.
Rather than herd helpers to create a horse we got a free roll a day that you could save up and when you used one there would be 3 horses of various colours and talents and prices you could buy any, all or none.
It’s been a really long time since I’ve played so I could have parts confused or terms misused lol I’m sure @ConfluenceFarms could do a better explanation. -
I would love that. Wish it was still around. I ride western and hopefully will be competing on my 2 paint gelding.
