What is the difference between the colors of these horses?
-
I made these two EXP drafts, and both have the same obvious genes. But they appear to be different shades. Do others see this? Any idea what might be causing the difference?
(On a related note, how often to EXP's create anything other than homozygous common colors?)
Here is the stallion:
Salish EXP Haida Gwai
And the mare:
Skagit EXP Wine Dark Sea -
Might the stallion's brighter red be that hidden DP gene?
-
Bay has natural variation between horses even with the same genetics.

No, it'd be the other way around since they aren't wild bay (A+). If I had to guess, I'd say either a natural variance in the colours, or the mare is het dp as well. Not that good with dp in bays myself though.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

Mare isn't het DP. Sorry, just natural shades. This is a het DP bay for reference.
