So I was thinking about starting a sable champagne side project but was gonna set it aside until I could spend the time trying to find the right stud. Lo-and-behold, I get the Yule Log HH on my other account! So I guess my project will begin a little sooner than expected! Wish I would have made him a 2 year old though.

I'm going to try to get a few sables next season -- I bought a sable stud to breed to my gold mares, but he's too young at the moment.

My current stud is AA so there's pretty much no hope of sables while he's around. (He's great otherwise though! Very happy with his quality and he shows well too.)

Sables are:
E_ At (At or a), Ch_

So Brown with Champagne. And a very valid question!

I just started a champagne line as well!
Mine aren't just sable though. Mostly gold, I think I'm going to call my line the "poor man's pearl" because that's what gold champagne reminds me of lol.

I'm trying to reduce Cream in my Sable herd. This colt is so cute that I keep telling myself "but he's only het for Ccr... and he's leopard... and he's so cute..." If anyone is interested give me a buzz. :-c

At the other end of the spectrum, I also have a 16.2hh Draft Sable Appaloosa colt that is hom ECA3P+ with just a small hip blanket that may come available as I sort foals.

@CrewCut you could GMT the cream off, if he fits your goals otherwise. ;)

@wendolyne Yes, those are sable. They are both brown with champagne.

@Haltanny, somebody with a much fatter pixel pocketbook could GMT the Ccr off, his mama is het for it. But not me.

@Wendolye, yes indeed! But Sable isn't sneaky like DP or GP or snowflake - if they're Sable, it will be right there in their name (unless they're Gray. Gray trumps all.)

Thanks. What genes are needed to breed for a sable?
If any one wants eggs from either mare I can gather them as I will not be breeding for sable this session. I need to learn more about it.
Any one have a good cheat page?

The genes you need are exactly what your girls have.
EE or Ee to show black pigment
AtAt or Ata to turn the black to brown
ChCh or Chch to dilute to Sable.

they can have Cream, Roan, Dun, Silver, other genes and combinations which change the look to different degrees, but Sable is E_At_Ch

I never really thought about it before, but my cremello stallion and one of my best bay mares have thrown two sable siblings together. I guess I know why now! I'd also be interested in joining the chat room. :)
