Keeping mares in pasture
-
I was looking and noticed my mares actually tell me how many days they have been in pasture. Does it do any good to keep them in pasture over 30 days? I notice that's when the counting stops, it just says 30+. I have more barns then pastures so if it doesn't matter then I might as well pull them out to make room for new girls to get their 30+
-
Yes, once they reach 30 days their bonus maxes out. However, if you take them out the bonus will reset. You'd better just pick which ones you want to keep bonussed and which ones to keep showing and manually breeding. :P
-
That's odd because I pull everyone out of pasture to show every week and then put them right back in pasture. I guess I need to invest in more pastures and split everyone up that way.
-
And did they keep their 30+ days label? Interesting. :)
-
It seems that way because they still say 30+ days as of today and I pulled them out on Monday to show.
-
Grant it they are only out of the pasture for maybe a couple hours just to get them into two shows and they go right back in. Maybe if I left them out over night it would reset?
-
P'rhaps, I'd like to see what happens. :D
-
Well I pulled some mares out of pasture so I could have some more experienced eyes look them over for possible DP carriers and I just put them back into pasture. None of them lost their pasture bonus :)
-
Cool! I don't think you even had to pull them out for that, but if it gives us more info... :D
-
I just pulled everyone and put them all in one barn to make it easier to go through. Yeah, I think it's pretty cool although I like the pasture when you want to breed a lot of mares to one stallion instead of doing each one individually but it's nice to know they wont loose their bonus. Now if the horses in the pasture would go back to the barn that you pulled them from instead of back to the primary barn that would be nice lol
-
That would be nice. :P
Did you pull the mares out to look at the foals? You don't have to do that. :P You can still look at a horse's page when she's in the pasture, and she'll still show up in searches. -
I wasn't sure if other people can see them when they are in pasture. Some of them I'm still unsure of because they have two Sooty gene so that already makes them look dark, it's very hard. I have some nice obvious DP though in both foundation and 2gen That I'll use for my DP line. Then the trick will be picking through their foals to decide who to use to add DP to my other colors I'm working on. The one thing I'm still confused about it how to tell if a horse is Homo or Het for DP.
-
Some examples I'm having trouble with would be like this guy. I'm assuming because of his dad he's Het for DP

Then I have horses like this guy.

He has one Sooty gene but if you look at him Dam she looks like she possibly is Het for DP and may have passed it on to him but I'm so unsure of that. -
I had my mares out of my pasture for several days to show and when I put them back in just recently they still had like 20-30 days listed on their "days in pasture" stat. So I'm not sure if maybe the days in pasture stat isn't showing correctly, or if their pasture bonus really didn't get reset by pulling them out.SALVISTAR PERFORMANCE HORSES

FJ-- I'm pretty sure Flirt is heterozygous DP--he seems too dark for just 1 Ssty. I'm equally sure Chocolate Kisses has no DP. His dam was just a homozygous sooty chestnut and I don't think his sire looks dark for an amber champagne, so I think he's just a sooty bay (he didn't get the champagne from his dad which is why he's so much darker) but I could be wrong because I'm not great at picking DP in bays or champagnes.
I was going through my bred pastures making notes on my mares and none of them have had their pasture bonus reset since breeding. I think there is a bug! -
Just to make sure, if it is a bug, I put everyone back into pastures. I would hate to have the bug fixed and loose the bonus lol
-
I have three pastures. I divided all my broodmares between the three of them and the mares have been there for 6 days now: my two "extra" pastures show this number correctly (except for one mare that for some reason shows 7 days) while my primary pasture started the countdown at 25 days. I don't remember if any of these mares have ever been a month or longer in a pasture at a time, but I do know that during the past months I've only put them in for a couple days each month to breed them, and taken them out afterwards so I could show them.ID #384

Yeah, I've never had mine in pasture for over a week. I pull everyone out on Sunday or Monday and how everyone then put the mares back and as of today I have several who show 30+. So if it is a bug it's been going on for awhile. It certainly has me scratching my head. I'll keep pulling and showing and putting them back though just in case.
